Drug-induced pruritus is an itch caused or triggered by medication. There are various itchy drug eruptions, but generally, the term ‘drug-induced pruritus’ implies that no primary rash is present — just scratch marks. Pruritus can begin within hours or up to several weeks after the drug responsible has first been administered. Most drug rashes are mild and cause an itchy rash that’s red or pink (in fair skin) or purple or skin-colored (in darker skin tones). More severe rashes are much less common. They lead to widespread blisters and are life-threatening. The most common medications that cause skin reactions are antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and NSAIDs. Summary: Itching is reported as a side effect among people who take Gabapentin (gabapentin), especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for < 1 month also take Vitamin D3, and have Multiple sclerosis. It manifests itself as a purple rash that starts as a small spot on the forearm and often spreads from a spot to a larger blotch. If I leave it alone it fades and disappears after a few days. If scratch the itchy rash it seems to be very near the skin surface and bleeds very easily. Rashes is reported as a side effect among people who take Gabapentin (gabapentin), especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for < 1 month also take Tylenol, and have Rheumatoid arthritis. Itching isn't a side effect of gabapentin according to Mayo. Itching can be a side effect of opiate use. This case, and limited literature data, suggest that gabapentin may cause rash that is severe enough to necessitate discontinuation in a small percentage of children. Further research is needed to determine the actual incidence and severity of gabapentin-related rash in this population. Very rare (less than 0.01%): Hypersensitivity syndrome, a systemic reaction with a variable presentation that can include fever, rash, hepatitis, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia, and sometimes other signs and symptoms Gabapentin may cause serious or life threatening allergic reactions called anaphylaxis. But this is very rare. These symptoms may be the first signs of a serious reaction: Call your doctor right This medication may cause serious skin reactions. They can happen weeks to months after starting the medication. Contact your care team right away if you notice fevers or flu-like symptoms with a rash. The rash may be red or purple and then turn into blisters or peeling of the skin. Dry skin can cause itching, which can lead to a skin rash. Increase your fluid intake to keep your body and skin hydrated. If your urine is dark yellow, this means you’re not drinking enough. PHN can happen after a person has had shingles, an infection from the same virus as chickenpox that causes a painful rash or blisters. Nerve pain from PHN can last for months, or even longer, after the rash has gone away. An extended-release form of gabapentin is also FDA-approved to treat PHN. For example, if the rash is very itchy, an antihistamine or oral steroid can help manage the itching until the rash clears up. If you suspect you have a drug rash, talk with your doctor right away. Skin rashes and hives: Itching and inflammation of the skin may be observed in patients who take gabapentin for the first time. If the redding in the skin worsens, you may be allergic to gabapentin and you will have to talk to your doctor to change your medication. You or the person who's unwell may also have a rash that's swollen, raised, itchy, blistered or peeling. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital. The pain is usually described as having a burning sensation and is often in response to stimuli that does not ordinarily cause pain. This pain and pruritus originate from the nervous system. Dosage of gabapentin. The use of gabapentin for neuropathic pain/pruritus is recommended only in patients over 18 years of age. Seizure medication: Neurontin (gabapentin) is useful in treating itching associated with CKD and neurologic-related itching. Antidepressants: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a type of antidepressant that can be used to treat different types of itching. More rarely, gabapentin can cause fluid buildup (edema), weight gain, and vision problems. It can also cause diarrhea. More serious (but rare) side effects include suicidal thoughts or behavior, and mood changes in children. Gabapentin is a well-established treatment option for itch with a reassuring safety profile that does not require continued lab monitoring. Generalized itching is a common cause of visits to the dermatologist and can be difficult to treat, leading to sleepless nights and inability to function. Gabapentin may cause dizziness and sleepiness and can impair your ability to safely drive.
