Neurontin (gabapentin) is associated with memory loss in a dose dependent fashion, meaning the higher doses you take, the more chance there is of having some sort of memory loss, or cognitive impairment. Gabapentin use has been associated with memory loss and cognitive decline. Studies suggest that the risk of dementia may be higher in patients treated with gabapentin. It is important for patients and healthcare providers to be aware of the potential cognitive side effects of gabapentin. Gabapentin, a medication commonly prescribed for nerve pain and seizures, has been linked to potential cognitive side effects, including memory loss. While its therapeutic benefits are well-documented, some individuals report experiencing forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating during its use. Can Gabapentin cause memory loss? Yes, memory loss is a potential side effect of Gabapentin. While not experienced by everyone, some individuals may notice difficulties with memory or concentration while taking Gabapentin for pain and symptom management. There are conflicting findings as to the prevalence of CAEs. One retrospective analysis showed memory loss in 35% and attentional problems in 27% of 60 patients [Park et al. 2007], while other reports indicate cognitive problems in 4–12% of children [Kothare et al. 2006; Kim et al. 2005]. While the evidence suggests that gabapentin alone does not cause memory loss, it can lead to brain fog or minor confusion. However, combining gabapentin with other drugs like baclofen can result in significant memory loss and impairment. More rarely, gabapentin can cause fluid buildup (edema), weight gain, and vision problems. It can also cause diarrhea. More serious (but rare) side effects include suicidal thoughts or behavior, and mood changes in children. A report from ISMP QuarterWatch (March 27, 2019) warns about the inappropriate use of GABA drugs like gabapentin and pregabalin. Mental impairment, confusion and memory loss are recognized side effects. Some people use the term fuzzy thinking to describe the brain impact. Gabapentin, a medication commonly used for epilepsy and neuropathic pain, can cause memory problems in some individuals. Memory loss caused by Gabapentin may improve or resolve after stopping the medication, but not everyone will experience a complete recovery. Most of the drugs used to treat chronic pain can cause confusion and memory issues. The same sample was used for assessing functional status change as measuring cognitive decline ().At the first visit after index, the association of gabapentin initiation with functional decline was not significant for either change in FAQ sum (OR [95% CI]: 1.50 [0.76, 2.96]) or FAQ mean (1.56 [0.93, 2.63]). 3.
