I read with great interest the work by Kaufman and Struck [1] dealing with gabapentin-induced sexual dysfunction (SD). Although the authors describe a single case, it adds important information on SD related to new antiepileptic drugs. Low-dose gabapentin may result in marked sexual dysfunction, including loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and anorgasmia. Such sexual dysfunction may lead to medication noncompliance. Some men have reported experiencing symptoms of low testosterone while on gabapentin, including decreased libido and diminished muscle mass. If you are concerned about the potential effects of gabapentin on testosterone production, it is important to discuss this issue with your healthcare provider. Gabapentin is widely prescribed for such symptoms as restless legs, hot flashes, and nerve tingling; based on this study’s results, a clinician should think twice about prescribing this medication to women in their child-bearing years, since it has been shown to decrease free estrogen. We are very happily married and have a very healthy sex life, so I know it's the Gabapentin. I have previously been prescribed all the other usual medications for my nerve pain, but gabapentin has been the most effective so far.
