Researchers aren’t quite sure how gabapentin works to treat numbness and muscle twitching in MS. A few studies have looked at gabapentin for treating muscle spasms in MS, and they found that it significantly improved spasticity (muscle stiffness and pain) compared to a placebo (inactive drug). Numbness and tingling is reported as a side effect among people who take Gabapentin (gabapentin), especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for 2 - 5 years also take Lyrica, and have Multiple sclerosis. Another extended-release form of gabapentin is FDA-approved to treat restless legs syndrome. This condition causes unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them around, especially at night, which disrupts sleep. Doctors often prescribe gabapentin off-label to treat conditions such as: alcohol addiction. So, this is a condition of unknown cause that damages multiple nerves; the most affected nerves tend to be those that provide sensation to the legs and feet. Sometimes other terms are used, including cryptogenic neuropathy or chronic polyneuropathy of undetermined cause. Over the last week my legs often go completely numb from the knee down. I can only assume it is the gabapentin. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal? There are things you can do to help cope with them: As your body gets used to gabapentin, these side effects should wear off. Some side effects of gabapentin may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. More rarely, gabapentin can cause fluid buildup (edema), weight gain, and vision problems. It can also cause diarrhea. More serious (but rare) side effects include suicidal thoughts or behavior, and mood changes in children. I developed tingling in both my legs and right arm after a traumatic event. I have had it for over three years now and wonder if anyone else has had it this long. My legs can't get cold as then they hurt. I have been taking 300mg 3 times a day and wonder if it even helps. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. If you are unsteady or your feet, then please be extra cautious as gabapentin can worsen unsteadiness. Patients taking Neurontin may experience swelling in the feet and ankles. The presence of lower leg swelling may cause discomfort and impair walking. My mother-in-law was unable to wear regular shoes because of swelling of her feet and ankles, so we found her socks and soft slippers that fit her feet comfortably.
