Gabapentin is not metabolized by the liver. Instead, it is excreted unchanged in your kidneys after circulating in your blood. Gabapentin affects nerves and chemicals in your body that are involved in some types of pain and in seizures. But gabapentin can be prescribed to help with pain, seizures, and anxiety in dogs. Preventing Seizures Gabapentin has anticonvulsant properties that make it beneficial for adjunctive therapy for dogs with refractory seizures or those whose current medication regime is no longer effective enough. Controlling Pain Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant with pain-relieving effects that may be used to treat partial-onset seizures or relieve nerve pain. Research has shown gabapentin binds strongly to a specific site (called the alpha2-delta site) on voltage-gated calcium channels and this is thought to be the way gabapentin works to relieve nerve pain and lower Gabapentin, a common over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been linked to rare individual case reports of liver injury. However, in rare cases, individuals with pre-existing liver conditions or those taking other liver-damaging medications may experience an increased risk of liver-related side effects. I do sometimes bit more numbness. I think l can tolerate the pain just as long as l can get off of it because it really isn't helping. So it's really defeating it's purpose. Just like it can be used as a long-term pain medication, it can be used longterm to help with calming if it has a visible benefit.
