I know that gabapentin works on neuropathic pain, but does it work for muscle related pain as well or not? Has anyone ever had the experience of Gabapentin causing severe muscle cramps in arms and legs and muscular pain and feeling of weakness? I know it is supposed to basically do the opposite and help with muscular problems..but this has happened twice to me as soon as I started the gaba and it was very severe, Gabapentin is occasionally taken as a pain relief option, but what’s the science behind it? This article will determine whether gabapentin is effective for arthritis pain, how it works, and how to make the most of it. I was not on Gabapentin for a long period of time. When I realized it did nothing for the numbness, I stopped taking it. I have been fortunate not to experience pain with my neuropathy yet. The muscle and fascia pain I do experience has been diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Some studies suggest that gabapentin, in its oral form, may help alleviate OA symptoms. By targeting specific nerve pathways, gabapentin could potentially reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. Researchers believe that gabapentin may also help slow down the progression of OA by reducing oxidative stress and promoting joint repair. While potentially useful for treating severe knee OA, there is no strong evidence that gabapentin can provide relief from autoimmune forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. The article describes how gabapentin is commonly used and how it may be prescribed to treat knee arthritis pain. Gabapentin for other types of nerve pain. Gabapentin can also treat nerve pain from PHN, which is the most common complication of shingles. It’s also used off-label to treat diabetes-related nerve pain. If you have nerve pain from other causes — like back injury, nerve injury, or after surgery — it still may help. I've been taking the gabapentin for three weeks and the pain has increased not decreased. I now have such severe pain in my elbows and fore arms I can no longer wash myself! Feels like I've gone in the gym and done 100 chin ups and torn my muscles. Role of meds: The gabapentin does not cure any illness but may decrease intensity of pain generated by peripheral or central nerve disorder. Typically has minimal effect on musculo-ligamentous pain, and really is not helpful in presence of muscle disease. Muscle relaxants seem to work better. For healthcare professionals. Applies to gabapentin: compounding powder, oral capsule, oral solution, oral tablet, oral tablet extended release. General adverse events. The most common adverse reactions associated with the use of this drug were dizziness, somnolence, and peripheral edema. Gabapentin is FDA-approved as Neurontin to treat partial seizures in adults and children with epilepsy. Partial seizures are convulsions that originate from a single location in the brain. Neurontin is also approved to treat a type of nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN. Bottom line: Although gabapentin can relieve pain, it’s not a muscle relaxant so you won’t need it for a muscle spasm. Commonly reported side effects of gabapentin include dizziness, sleepiness, balance problems, blurred vision, coordination problems, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, increased pain (including pain in extremities, back pain and joint pain), brain fog, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Some patients may experience weight gain. Symptoms usually begin within hours of combining the drugs and include confusion, agitation, irregular heartbeat, unstable blood pressure, tremors, muscle rigidity, nausea and vomiting. If you have these symptoms, stop taking your medication and seek immediate medical help. Musculoskeletal pain. Musculoskeletal pain is experienced by up to 75 percent of people with PD and includes pain in the muscles, bones or skeleton. It is related to rigidity and decreased movement, and to arthritis. Many people with PD experience muscle cramps and tightness in the neck, spine and arms. Muscles may feel stiff or achy. You can take 100 to 300mg sublingual GABA to treat pain flares, or 100 to 200mg of GABA simultaneously with an opioid medication or GABA surrogate for added pain relief.
