Learn about the side effects of Neurontin (gabapentin), from common to rare, for consumers and healthcare professionals. Gabapentin can be an effective treatment for brain damage symptoms such as neuropathy, seizures, and autonomic dysfunction. However, it is not without side effects or risks. Therefore, consult with your doctor carefully before trying it, and alert your doctor immediately if any side effects appear. More rarely, gabapentin can cause fluid buildup (edema), weight gain, and vision problems. It can also cause diarrhea. More serious (but rare) side effects include suicidal thoughts or behavior, and mood changes in children. Some studies report that gabapentin can cause erectile dysfunction in men. However, older studies also report cases of sexual dysfunction and loss of libido in women. Additionally, the side Vitamin B6 can cause neuropathy even at low sustained doses (2mg daily). It shouldn't be in supplements because you get enough from food and these might even be fortified. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of neuropathy is B6 toxicity. Research supports the use of the anticonvulsants gabapentin (Gralise, Neurontin, Horizant) and pregabalin (Lyrica) to help relieve pain caused by damaged nerves. Both gabapentin and pregabalin are particularly effective in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy and pain caused by a spinal cord injury. In people with partial seizures, gabapentin works by decreasing abnormal activity in the brain. Experts believe gabapentin may cause brain cells to produce more of a chemical called GABA, which reduces abnormal electrical activity of brain cells. The gabapentin did help my neuropathy, and I was able to come off the pain medication, but it came with a variety of other new horrifying side effects. I struggled with my short-term memory, terrible confusion and lack of energy due to the gabapentin. I was on 1000mg of Gabapentin 3 times daily (3000mg total per day) for two years. One of the most significant drawbacks of relying solely on gabapentin for neuropathy is that it doesn't tackle the root cause of your nerve pain. It's a symptomatic treatment—meaning it may mask the pain without addressing why you're experiencing neuropathy in the first place. These can detect low levels of vitamins, diabetes, signs of inflammation or metabolic issues that can cause peripheral neuropathy. Imaging tests. CT or MRI scans can look for herniated disks, pinched nerves, also called compressed nerves, growths or other problems affecting the blood vessels and bones. Nerve function tests. Although gabapentin is not considered highly addictive, it does cross the blood-brain barrier and has a risk for physical dependence. Treating Brain Damage with Gabapentin. I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. Neurontin is also approved to treat a type of nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN. PHN can happen after a person has had shingles, an infection from the same virus as chickenpox that causes a painful rash or blisters. Nerve pain from PHN can last for months, or even longer, after the rash has gone away. I have been taking Gabapentin for 8 years for a pinched nerve in my spine. Now I have Mono Neuritis Multiplex and i take 800mg four x a day. Gabapentin is the only thing that helps the pain but it will do nothing for the numbness. Even Lyrica can't do that. Drug-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (DIPN) occurs when a chemical substance causes damage to the peripheral nervous system [1]. DIPN is potentially irreversible, resulting in sensory deficits and paresthesia typically in a glove and stocking type distribution; motor involvement is rare.
