Many gabapentin users in early recovery abuse gabapentin because, at high doses (800mg or more), they may experience a euphoric-like high that does not show up on drug screens. Gabapentin abusers typically take the drug in addition to opioids to produce their desired high, a dangerous and potentially deadly combination. Perhaps surprisingly, someone’s prescribed dose of gabapentin doesn’t dictate whether they will or will not abuse it. People abuse gabapentin at varying doses, including at therapeutic doses (900-3600mg per day) to supra-therapeutic doses. A third study compared gabapentin 900 mg/day, in three divided doses (N=111), and placebo (N=109). An additional gabapentin 1,200 mg/day dosage group (N=52) provided dose-response data. A statistically significant difference in responder rate was seen in the gabapentin 900 mg/day group (22%) compared to that in the placebo group (10%). Gabapentin may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and dizziness. Individuals with histories of drug abuse were most often involved in its misuse. In a survey looking at abuse of gabapentin, it was found that patients were taking on average 3,000 mg/day, ranging from 600 mg to 8,000 mg/day. Withdrawal, when reported, occurred within 12 hours to 7 days of discontinuation of the medication. As Neurontin, gabapentin is sold in capsules ranging from 100 mg to 400 mg, and in tablet form, it’s available in doses ranging from 300 mg to 800 mg. The half-life of a standard 300 mg dose of gabapentin is 5–7 hours, meaning half the dose is excreted from the body at this time. Gabapentin, a prescription medication approved for the treatment of seizures and neuralgia, is often prescribed off-label for substance use treatment, mental health problems, and pain. Emerging reports also suggest it is misused for the purpose of getting high. Gabapentin is widely prescribed. Though gabapentin was initially marketed as a medication with low potential for abuse and is commonly thought to be safe and effective, a growing body of evidence highlights the potential risks of overprescribing the medication. Gabapentin may be particularly desirable to those who are dependent on alcohol, cocaine, or opioids, as it may help to smooth out withdrawal symptoms of these drugs in between doses. In particular, gabapentin may reduce anxiety and help with relaxation during withdrawal from these substances. The more common dosage range is between 600 mg and 1,800 mg per day. High doses however, are a result of slow titration and were not started at such a level. Per your question, using 90 of the 300 mg capsules in 5 days does indicate abuse, misuse or diversion. This equates to 5,400 mg per day, well above a medically studied dose. Epidemiological and case report evidence suggests that the anti-epileptic and analgesic medication gabapentin is being misused internationally, with substance abuse populations at special risk for misuse/abuse. Gabapentin (Neurontin) carries a risk for abuse, can get you high if mixed with drugs, causes adverse side effects, and can lead to overdose. Although gabapentin is not a controlled substance at the federal level, the drug still carries the risk of abuse and overdose. Gabapentin overdose can be dangerous or even fatal in some cases, especially when taken with other drugs.
