Wanted to contribute some information today on the topic of the medication Gabapentin for alcohol use disorder. This is an interesting medication I use it in my practice with about 30-40% of my patients---often for people who don't do well on naltrexone, and/or if someone is suffering from a lot of anxiety. Combining the two often results in getting significantly more drunk. In my experience, and as many others have rightfully claimed, it makes drinks feel 3-4x more potent. Someone who would be only slight drunk at 2 drinks could now be absolutely trashed. A safe place for investigation and discussion of scientific and medical treatments for the neural glitch of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) such as The Sinclair Method (TSM), Baclofen, Campral, Topamax, Antabuse, etc. Hi, I've taken Gabapentin for 10 plus years now. I always take 900-1200 mg and wait two hours for them to kick in. I've read about staggering. I'm interested in this to increase my high and how long it last. Does anyone have any tried and true advice? I have been told that our bodies can only absorb 300-400 mg at a time. I take 3-4 times per day. After researching a little mor on the subject, it seems that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol alongside therapeutic doses of Gabapentin is well tolerated. This study ( Alcohol Clin Exp Res , 2007 , 31:221) demonstrated that doses up to 1200 mg of gabapentin was safe up to a BAC of around 0.3. Does anyone else notice a substantial decrease in drunkenness when taking gabapentin? I tend to drink a lot, but when I'm on gabapentin I do not get as drunk. I probably drink less than I would, but I seem to be far more present in the moment. I also wake up without a hangover. Please do not mix gabapentin with alcohol it’ll just make your withdrawals worse as you’ll now be dependent on two different drugs. If you’re going to take it only take it for 10 days max. It will help with the withdrawal symptoms depending on how much you drink a day. If you’re not an extremely heavy drinker it will help. The anticonvulsant drug gabapentin is used off-label to treat alcohol-related withdrawal, cravings, anxiety, and insomnia. Although it is well tolerated and has demonstrated efficacy for mild alcohol withdrawal and early abstinence, there is concern about its potential for abuse. "I have been on Gabapentin for 15 months. I know people with OUD use it to potentiate highs but I am talking about alcohol use disorder. Outside of OUD gabapentin is laughable as a drug of abuse compared to alcohol which can be bought literally anywhere. Gabapentin has a half-life of about six hours, so one dose is mostly gone by dinner time. That pattern reduces the interaction of gabapentin and alcohol. The six-hour half-life explains why you should take it three times a day - keeps a more level amount in your blood over time. Gabapentin is prescribed to aid against alcohol withdrawal anxiety, while the alcohol hangovers (withdrawals) create the anxiety to begin with. More importantly, talk to a doctor and be completely honest about your habit, they will set you on the right track to stop. "The oral bioavailability of gabapentin is approximately 80% at 100 mg administered three times daily once every 8 hours, but decreases to 60% at 300 mg, 47% at 400 mg, 34% at 800 mg, 33% at 1,200 mg, and 27% at 1,600 mg, all with the same dosing schedule. gabapentin really is a godsend with alcohol use disorder. it curbs the desire for sure. i stopped taking it, due to stories about long use that freaked me out, and i started slipping hard. i started retaking it again yesterday. good luck to you 🫶
