When you hear something called a “Beers drug” or hear someone say that a drug is on the “Beers list” it refers to medications that could be potentially inappropriate for use in older adults. What is the Beers Criteria? its expert panel have attempted to preserve the spirit and intent of the original Beers Criteria by providing an explicit list of PIMs that are best avoided by older adults in most circumstances or under specific situations, such as certain diseases, conditions, or care settings. The Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults is a list of medications that healthcare providers reference to safely prescribe medications for people above age 65. Because of this, some states have reclassified gabapentin as a Schedule V controlled substance. Doctors prescribe gabapentin with caution because of its misuse potential.
