I have Bipolar 2 and have been on Lamictal/Lamotrigine for 10 years now, and 6 weeks ago was put on Gabapentin for spinal stenosis. I was also concerned about combining the two. Still titrating up with the Lamictal, but so far I’ve found that it seems like it’s going to be more helpful for general anxiety and handling stress better, without being overly sedating for me (as I’ve dealt with when I tried upping my Gabapentin prior to being on Lamictal). Wellbutrin was the perfect addition to my lamotrigine. Lamictal kept me stable, but at a low grade depressive baseline. My hypomania was reduced significantly, but I didn’t feel like I was living. Wellbutrin balanced me out by drawing me out of that depressive baseline and giving me energy again. I personally like gabapentin as an anxiety med because it doesn’t make me drowsy, others I’ve tried have knocked me out. Lamictal is a tricky one to get used to but it’s worked for me for a long time when taken twice a day. I’ve noticed significant decreases in mood swings than when I’m off of it. Lamotrigine may increase the plasma concentrations of renally excreted drugs that are substrates of OCT 2. Lamotrigine inhibits OCT 2 in vitro. The clinical significance is unknown. I take 1200mg Gabapentin and 300mg Lamotrogine ER. Lamotrogine is for my mood/depression and Gabapentin is for my severe anxiety (I take Xanax for breakout anxiety). They are the perfect combo for me. Gabapentin didn’t help with insomnia but it didn’t make my ability to sleep any worse. I was on Lamictal, Seroquel and Abilify for a long time and didn’t have any side effects from either of the antipsychotics. I’m not currently on Lamictal due to another treatment I’m doing, and haven’t been on Abilify for a while because it wasn’t really effective for me. I've somehow not experienced any withdrawal symptoms either. Recently though they tried to switch me to Lamictal and completely dropped the Gabapentin. I had the rash/ulcer side effect and I'm curious if going cold turkey off Gaba is why. Regardless, Gabapentin just full on stopped working for me and instead was causing me to go manic at night. I take trileptal 300mg and seroquel 200mg at night. risperadol 3 mg, gabapentin 300 mg, lamictal 200mg and trileptal 300mg in the morning, and then 300mg of gabapentin in the evening. Gabapentin has actually helped my anxiety a lot, but the side effects have been a little rough. No one ever asks the patient. I am doing a taper down from Gabapentin, and I am going very slowly and titrate it by 5% every two weeks. I also take Kratom for my neuropathic pain (Gabapentin really stopped working) and I have heard from others that Kratom really helps people deal with the Gabapentin withdrawals. We are a haven for people with Bipolar Disorder (including Cyclothymia and Schizoaffective Disorder) and those on their journey towards a diagnosis to discuss Bipolar-related issues; a community, not just a help page. Lamictal has a very good safety profile and is widely tolerated. I don’t know much about the tapering timeline or if you can become dependent on the medication. I know for a fact that Gabapentin and Pregabalin have a moderate-abuse potential, as they affect GABA in the brain (much like if you took Valium or Xanax to calm your anxiety). I've spent probably a year on gabapentin and lamictal. Since you have nerve pain, I see no reason for you to discontinue gabapentin. Lamictal has been side effect free for me, but I have to take it twice a day since I take a larger dose (400mg). Anyone take Lamictal and Gabapentin together? Can you please share your story? I am currently on Lamictal 150 mg for a month. I started at 25 and slowly increased the doses. My psychiatrist just added to Gabapentin 300 mg (1-2 capsule daily) for my anxiety and sleep. I’ve had a great experience. I currently take Lexapro and Gabapentin (and Buspar and Lithium as well) and I’ve taken Lamictal in the past as well. Lamictal did not work well for me.
