Gabapentin keeps my sciatica pain to a minimal. I've taken this drug for the last four years ranging in doses between 300-6000 mg depending on what I was attempting to do. Regarding sleep, I find no difference taking it vs not taking it by itself. If I add a benzo or cannabis, sleep can come on easier without feeling groggy. Taking before bed allows me to sleep though any side effects. I also didn’t want to get hooked having to take it every 3/4 hours—something about that just makes me a little uncomfortable. I do feel moderate effects thought out the whole next day in terms of anxiety improvement and mood, but definitely not as much come the afternoon. Available research suggests that gabapentin may be helpful for primary insomnia. But we need more studies before we can determine if the benefit outweighs the risk. A study of over 250 people with occasional insomnia found that taking 250 mg of gabapentin before bedtime increased the length of time people slept. My plan would be to take 1 dose of 300mg before bed. At this dose there shouldn’t be much risk. My husband is 27, 185lbs, 5'8. He currently takes 300mg Gabapentin before bed for restless leg syndrome, and he's coming down with a cold. I'm wondering if it would be okay for him to take a nyquil tonight with his Gabapentin? Or just stick with dayquil? He also takes (prescribed) Effexor, Nexium, and Allegra in the morning. Never withdrawal for me even at 900 a day for several years For me what helped with sleep was getting really diligent about my sleep hygiene. No screens at least an hour before bed and I wear blue-light blocking glasses at work during the day. No food at least 2 hours before bed and no caffeine past noon. I also try to do something relaxing like a meditation app or reading a light book before bed. My 75-pound dog takes 1200 mg of gabapentin and 150 mg of trazadone before every vet appointment and any time we need to have guests over at our house. It’s a high dose, but she handles it well, and mostly she just gets very tired, then sleeps it off and she’s back to normal the next day. I've noticed that when I take gabapentin before bedtime, it helps me IMMENSELY with sleep. Melatonin, THC, meditation etc (my normal go-tos for sleep,) were not nearly as effective as gabapentin has been. Take it an hour before bed, lay down and 10 minutes later out for 8 hours. However, maybe it was just luck or because I never had any addictions ie: smoking, booze etc. Now I'll take one on a rare occasion if I want to get to sleep fast and get a full 8-hour deep sleep like if I have an unusual schedule like be up at midnight for a 3am flight. Now, I have to say though, I’m kind of a different case, before this regimen I was taking upwards to 600mg of morphine/day but me and pills don’t have the best of relationships so that’s why I asked for patches. 5mg oxy every 12 hrs seems a little ridiculous to me.
