I had stopped taking clonazepam .5 2-3/x day prn and had no withdrawal after a few years. The doctor suggested gabapentin. I am having severe withdrawals after taking it for 8 weeks. It seems like that varies for everyone but I was on a low dose for a short time. Exactly! Everyone should jump off of benzos with Gabapentin. It cuts the withdrawal symptoms by like 60 percent and makes it tolerable. And Gaba is much easier to come off of down the road than any benzo. Amazing how people say "don't do it that way!" It is by far the safest way! Specifically, it is useful in treating withdrawal and maintaining abstinence in people struggling with alcohol, benzodiazepine, and opioid addiction. A research review from Pharmacology & Pharmacy indicates that multiple studies show gabapentin as a positive support to alcohol detox and withdrawal. Gabapentin will mask benzo withdrawal symptoms. That may seem like a good thing, but when you finally reduce/eliminate the gabapentin, the benzo withdrawal symptoms may still be there. And/or gabapentin withdrawal may occur. I've been on 2400mg a day for 6 months and the inter dose withdrawal is making me crazy. I feel constant anxiety and intrusive thoughts and I know it's the gabapentin because it's only lasting about 2 hours a dose now. Gabapentin (or especially Lyrica, pregabalin) are very effective for benzo withdrawal, but they are not so powerful that they actually would prevent seizures if the benzo WD is that bad. So the answer is yes and no, yes, gabapentin will help you through benzo WD but no, it won't prevent seizures if you have very severe benzo WD. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on using gabapentin for benzodiazepine withdrawal. I have had some success using gabapentin to help reduce the amount of benzos I take. Its seems to me that gabapentin potentiates small levels of clonezepam. There’s just some interesting anecdotes, especially on reddit, ranging from “this worked cold turkey”, “high dose gabapentin + low dose benzo taper” etc etc. and I can understand how it should* work.. afterall, benzo withdrawal is primarily just the severity of stress the gaba receptors are now that they aren’t being force fed Everybody’s individual response is different. The consensus is that Gabapentin doesn’t have terrible withdrawals. Nearly for a fact of the matter, Benzodiazepine WD is nothing short of torture. I have baseline panic disorder as well as depression and OCD. The Gabapentin withdrawal was some depression and insomnia. I saw a doctor that specializes in this protracted withdrawal. I asked if this would eventually go away, my symptoms, and she said it’s been a year so it is optimistic to think it will go away anytime soon and how long do I want to live with the symptoms 5, So for those taking gabapentin or thinking about it for benzo withdrawal, remember to take the magnesium (and calcium) at least 2 hrs before any gabapentin. I'm taking gabapentin right now and it seems to help the taper, OP, but I also like magnesium before bed. If you start taking Gabapentin now, you might not be able to stop it for years. It can cause similar withdrawal symptoms as benzodiazepines and other psychiatric medications. So, you should be prepared for the possibility of staying on the drug long-term or having to taper off it slowly, which could take years. It's worth taking gabapentin if you've run out of benzos and need something to treat the withdrawal. But it rarely treats all the symptoms, it can cause a lot of side effects, and it's also hard to taper (short half life, hard to cut pills). Well, turns out trying to come off of gabapentin after having been on it for 2 years feels like benzo withdrawal with some minor opiate withdrawal symptoms. the fucking first panic that happened was awful we were just watching the new top gun and suddenly I just kinda didn’t feel right walked outside or the room and was hit with a full on But, yes gabapentin works wonders for Xanax withdrawal. It’s extremely effective on opiate withdrawal as well. I’ve found large amounts are the best. 1800 mgs x3 and then be aware of how your feeling. Add some if you need it. Dude, that's crazy they don't believe you about having some withdrawal. If it were me, I'd try and switch to Gabapentin, but I find it pretty easy to come off gabapentin, even at a fairly high dosage. Still some people get withdrawals from it, but for me it helped a lot and was easy to come off. I never abused it, but was prescribed 600mg 3x daily. I was prescribed klonopin and ambien for 4 years. After hitting a tolerance withdrawal and dealing with daily issues from these pills, I realized it was time to come off. After attempts to slowly taper off failed, I detoxed from both of them in September 2014. I went through the usual rough benzo withdrawal. A simple Reddit search will show you. and withdrawals are ridiculous. It’s not as simple as a taper. There are lots of Facebook groups that show the taper needs to be in the 1mg dose at times. You cannot just half the dosages. The people who say it’s the next opioid or benzo are saying that for a reason. It’s extremely abused on the streets.
