gabapentin cat not eating reddit can you take gabapentin prn for anxiety

My kitty was taken to the hospital on Saturday after she stopped eating. Fortunately she’s okay, it was a gallstone blockage that seems to be resolved. They sent me home with some meds for her, one of them being 50mg Gabapentin for pain/anxiety. After giving it to her, my cat is a total zombie. I once tasted my cat’s liquid gabapentin (because she wouldn’t take it; she took liquid antibiotics fine, but not gabapentin). Not only it’s bitter beyond belief, but it’s also hard to wash the taste out of your mouth. We have our cat on liquid gabapentin and it's always a fight to get it in her, she won't eat food for like 2 days if we mix meds in it one day cause she doesn't trust it after that so we gotta go the kitty burrito route for her med administration. us buprenorphine and gabapentin to use "as needed for abnormal behavior/pain" (buprenorphine only every 8 hours and gabapentin twice a day). Almost immediately after we got home, he started doing it again. I gave him a dose of the buprenorphine and his twitching stopped right away. The next day I gave him the gabapentin as directed, no episodes. We tried it but our cat had side effects. She stopped eating and did this really weird facial twitch thing so we stopped it. She does get gabapentin twice a day for FHS. If your cat doesn't just let you sneak it into food then my advice would be to watch every single TikTok/YouTube you can to learn how to pill a cat. No, I don't open the capsule to split the dosage--My cat is a 'chewer,' and will not swallow the pill pockets whole. I know that the powder is what tastes awful, but I've been disguising it in various things--that she will no longer eat. My cat is geriatric and ANXIOUS. I give her gabapentin often but not daily because she absolutely will not eat if she thinks I might be trying to poison her. She acts loopy and sleepy but every single vet I’ve ever been to has told me what you said, I just can’t keep her taking it long enough for that effect. So my kitty (2.5) has gabapentin for anxiety. She managed to take it twice before she figured out either a smell or a texture of it. She will absolutely not eat anything that I have put gabapentin in. I have mixed it in with treats (churu, the only tube treat she likes), wet food, I tried putting it in a pill pouch, nothing works. Posted by u/dragonmermaid4 - 1 vote and 1 comment The gabapentin did not make her drowsy or stoned. A week later she began taking piroxicam which, along with the gabapentin has been found to be better at controlling pain and slowing the growth, for her kind of cancer (as opposed to steroids). My cat would not eat for 2 days & I had to take him back to the vet on the second day for an injection of another pain medication & anti-inflammatory, in addition to buying an appetite stimulant. Fortunately, after giving him a dose of the appetite stimulant, he did begin to eat the evening of the 2nd day. It was terrible to see. I'm not sure she would ever have been able to stop the med. I would imagine that your cat will remain on the med for the duration of their life. So that's something to consider. The other issue is that my cat would often not want to eat the food mixed with the med, because gabapentin is very bitter. That’s my main question. Next, I want to add that in past 14 days, he was not eating and usually that is due to pain and leads to us feeding him the occasional dose of gabapentin which he will usually consume mixed in his wet food. He was not even eating wet food, so I gave him gabapentin through the syringe by squirting it into his mouth. They usually eat anything with Churu but this time they could smell the gabapentin and I failed giving them their sedative! I am really nervous about the trip, and it’s CRUCIAL that I get them to eat the gabapentin. Gabapentin is supposed to wear off in 8 - 12 hours. The first time I gave our cat Gabapentin the vet told me to let them know if he's too groggy because the dosage may have to be adjusted. Obviously not all cats react the same way. The only thing is, if you don't have any other doses you risk your cat not eating it. It shouldn't have a flavor, my cat had no problem eating it but you never know. I also found that the med itself was really strong. For those that have given their cats Gabapentin, did you find any pattern as how far before or after their typical mealtime to time the dose to maximize the chance it will help them eat more? My cat is also on Mirataz mirtazapine ointment the past two days and it hasn't gotten him eating. NO BURRITO. Seriously. My cat just stood there on all fours, eating up treats, accepting treats, while the doctor drew two little vials of blood. I was SHOCKED. The only other occasion I've given my cat gabapentin is when my apartment was going to be testing the fire alarm because my cat hates the fire alarm. Had an odd experience with the gabapentin where by Thursday evening he could barely walk and was very lethargic so the last dose we gave him (30 mg) was on Thursday morning - he was thankfully better by Friday morning.
