Discover the current status of gabapentin scheduling as a controlled substance across the US and the PDMP requirements for each state. Valuable insights for healthcare providers. I know it's different everywhere, but in the state of Michigan Gabapentin became a controlled substance (CV) in Jan/Feb 2019. When it happened I wasn't that surprised, Michigan wasn't the first state to make Gabapentin a controlled substance, I remember my law professor saying "It will likely become a controlled substance sometime soon in your career" and that was in 2017. I am also in Ohio and it is not controlled. Your hospital may treat it like it is but a DEA number is not required to prescribe it. I can't link it because it's a PDF but if you search on Google is gabapentin a controlled substance the first result that comes up is a PDF update from the Ohio board of pharmacy stating it is not controlled Gabapentin (Neurontin) is not a narcotic or federally controlled substance by the DEA as of November 2022, but it is classified as a Schedule V controlled substance in certain states. SSRIs are prescription only but not controlled, same with antibiotics. Opioids and Benzodiazepines are controlled and prescription only. When I became a pharmacist, I set it up as a controlled substance in our machine because my techs were complaining about the same thing and I knew it was true. Fast forward, no more missing gabapentin. For the last 3 months I (37F) have been running out of a medicine I need for anxiety called gabapentin, a controlled substance. I am going through a lot of health issues so I am on a lot of medication, and I use the same pharmacy for all of my medications for ease of communication between the pharmacy and my several different specialty doctors. Something must have changed in the last couple years because gabapentin is a controlled substance now, apparently. I have to do pill counts of it alongside Suboxone for my clinic patients. When I first started working in 2019, at a VA hospital in med surg, it was prescribed to a majority of those VA patients for restless leg or neuropathy. I've recently learned that gabapentin has been classified as a controlled substance in my state, but before this I haven't heard anything about gabapentin being an abused substance, like benzodiazapines or opiates. Gabapentin isn’t a controlled substance according to the federal government. But several states have passed their own laws classifying gabapentin a schedule V (schedule 5) controlled substance. Combining gabapentin and opioids can be extremely dangerous. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Gabapentin’s unscheduled status reflects its lower potential for abuse or dependency compared to controlled substances. However, the FDA monitors gabapentin for potential misuse, particularly when combined with other central nervous system depressants. But Gabapentin is not scheduled on the federal level as a controlled substance, only state level have a few states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. have listed it as schedule V. Reply reply I had to do research for a medical article for physicians and the truth of gabapentin was shocking. In actuality, we discovered Gabapentin only helped about 1-2% of chronic pain patients even though there was mass propaganda that Gabapentin could replace opioids. I live on the border between two states, I don't prescribe a ton of controlled substances but it would limit our practice, especially since gabapentin in the bordering state is more tightly controlled (requires 2 factor authentication to send electronically) than in my current state (MA can send it in). It is not a controlled substance, but we have started receiving it in the same bag as our CIII-CV's. There are definitely people that abuse it in our area, but it is not the most widely abused drug (aside from opioids, benzos and non-benzos are the most abused). Overprescribing by itself was not the main issue with the opioid crisis, it was how lethal the substances are. Stimulants, benzos, and gabapentin are all over-prescribed but we will not see a fraction of the amount of deaths that opioids caused. Like I said in my other comment it’s literally a controlled substance in 12 states. In others it is required to be reported to the PDMP. Recent Regulations on Gabapentin. As noted, gabapentin, unliked pregabalin, is not currently considered a federally controlled substance in the United States.
