My dog has severe separation anxiety, which is why the gabapentin was recently added. Years of working with a behavior modification trainer and Prozac have had intermittent positive results. It was to the point that I started getting anxious about looking at the camera/coming into the house because he was on a path to severely injuring himself. Gabapentin is an excellent option in managing anxiety when previous therapies alone have proven to be insufficient. It may be used situationally, prior to predictable stressful events, or administered daily in combination with an SSRI or TCA. Started my dog on gabapentin for anxiety three weeks ago under guidance from out vet. It actually seems like it's making his reactivity worse. He jumps up to the window every time a dog/person/whatever passes by outside, hackles raised and whining. This is a totally new behaviour, and so freaks me out. /r/dogs is a place for dog owners of all levels of knowledge, skill, and experience to discuss various topics related to responsible dog ownership. This subreddit is a great starting point for a lot of information, but you should always verify and expand upon what you've read from reputable sources before putting it to use in your daily life. Any experiences using gabapentin for anxiety for your dog before thunderstorms, fireworks, etc? Our vet prescribed it for our new epileptic rescue's firework/storm anxiety and I hadn't heard about it like I had trazodone. Curious others' experiences. I have read in many other posts that Gabapentin is used for anxiety in various cases. We currently have a large amount of 300mg caps of gabapentin from a failed treatment for a different dog (prescribed in Sep 2021). I am wondering if it is worth attempting to ask out vet about using this gabapentin to help our dog manage his aggression/anxiety. I take gabapentin daily for my anxiety, but I also tend to take 2-3 day breaks in between to break up my tolerance every few weeks, those in between days are pretty brutal as the withdrawal usually begins around the 24 hour mark, and I usually lose an entire night of sleep. My dog tried gabapentin for anti-anxiety and also for his neuter before, but he was still so hyper and I saw absolutely no difference in his behavior, and he was taking 300mg dosage. Is this common or has anyone else’s dog not reacted to Gabapentin? My dog is 30lbs and receives 75mg of trazodone/400mg of gabapentin and his clomicalm. This is behaviorist protocol. She said since he was still a little iffy going in we can bump up to 600mg gabapentin next time and a little more trazodone. She even said we can top off at 1000mg of gaba and still be within his limits 😳. Gabapentin for dogs is commonly prescribed for pain, anxiety, or seizures. It's generally safe, but there are some known side effects to be aware of. Gabapentin may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and dizziness. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and seek medical attention if experiencing serious side effects or changes in mood or behavior. Gabapentin is prescribed by healthcare professionals and should only be taken under medical supervision. Can’t speak for how your dog will react to gabapentin, but a lot of separation anxiety medicating/training is dog dependent. My dog goes to a veterinary behaviorist for his anxiety (general and separation). He’s 50lbs and gets 600mg gaba twice a day, 40mg fluoxetine once a day and 300mg trazodone as needed for departures. I use it for mine but not for situational anxiety; it’s just an adjunct for separation anxiety and fear reactivity (venlafaxine being the primary). It does have a very very wide margin of safety which is really nice. My dog takes 1000mg gabapentin twice daily and I think it really helps get her to that baseline level of calm. My dog started on prozac about five weeks ago, and we are still in the initial loading period. To bridge the gap, my vet prescribed gabapentin. You'll need to give the Prozac some time. Gabapentin is a nerve pain reliever, so if she significantly improves on it, that's actually a sign to investigate possible causes of pain. Most reactive dogs turn out to be in pain. Prozac straight up cured my dog's separation anxiety. For what it's worth, I give my 30 lb dog ~300mg of gabapentin for anxiety as needed (like around the 4th of July) as recommended by my vet. A short-term dose should not be an issue, but you should really call your vet. One of the benefits of gabapentin is that many dogs experience no side effects or only mild transient side effects. The three most common potential side effects listed in the drug handbooks (and corroborated by my personal experience) are sedation, loss of coordination, and GI upset. Let’s take a look at each side effect in more detail. So my dog does better with gabapentin that trazodone. Gabapentin mellows him out just slightly so that he can focus and calm down or come to me instead of getting stuck being scared. Trazodone, however, seems to make him confused and unable to focus, which can make him seem calmer but actually just makes him clumsy. My dog has been on trazadone for several years for his anxiety and still had bad anxiety with storms/rain. We added gabapentin on those days with the trazadone and it makes such a difference. He is much happier and calmer those days. I know he feels better not being an anxious mess those days. Gabapentin offers several benefits for dogs with anxiety, including: Reduced Neuronal Excitability: Helps calm the overactive brain responsible for anxiety. Pain Relief: It can simultaneously address pain, which is beneficial for dogs with co-existing pain and anxiety.
