HOW TO PROPERLY USE GABAPENTIN: Drink each down with a decent amount of fizzy soda. The acidity helps it absorb in the stomach. Trust me. Do this. Once you've taken the last pill, have a nice meal. This is excellent advice— I’d just add that gabapentin has few side effects for animals or people, which is why it’s increasingly prescribed for off label uses, like mild sedation. My elderly 17lb.dog is on 100mg gaba twice daily for neurological (spinal) pain long term without any impact on kidney or liver values. Dog2 was on Gabapentin when she had pancreatitis. For her, it is definitely not the right drug. She had the usual side effects and some of the rarer side effects. YMMV. Dog2 has a liver defect and some other health issues -- lots of things have side effects or weird interactions with her that are perfectly ok for other dogs. When I dose gabapentin, I'll stop at 1800mg, which takes me 3 or so hours to consume in 300mg increments, and I won't hit the peak for another 2 hours after that. It looks like the dosage for your pet is at 15mg/kg based on the information provided; gabapentin dosing can go up to 40mg/kg depending on what it's being used for (higher dosages are typically used to relieve situational fear/anxiety/stress), so your vet has not overdosed your dog - pain management doses are typically in the lower therapeutic I see tons of witch-doctors just upping the dose 1200 mgs qid. This doesn't work. You need to keep the dose small 100-300 mgs and increase frequency start at tid and step your way up to q2h. If it's real pain they will be compliant, if it's fake they will want a bigger dose problem solved. From what I've read on this Sub-Reddit a lot of people are on far higher doses than 100mg which suggests it's at the lower end and therefore hopefully means less chance of side effects or issues, I'm of course no expert nor a Doctor though. That may indicate that the Gabapentin does indeed provide up to 8 hours duration of therapeutic effects.
