I'm positive it came from taking a high dose of gabapentin with alcohol. Combining the two often results in getting significantly more drunk. In my experience, and as many others have rightfully claimed, it makes drinks feel 3-4x more potent. Someone who would be only slight drunk at 2 drinks could now be absolutely trashed. Gabapentin is a prescription medication used to treat epilepsy, nerve pain, shingles, restless leg syndrome, and alcohol use disorder. However, it can be dangerous to drink alcohol while taking gabapentin. Both substances are depressants that slow down the body and brain. Was prescribed 300mg/daily of Gabapentin a month ago for anxiety/alcohol cravings. So far after a month not only have I had no anxiety attacks but my cravings and desire/drive to drink has for now dissapated. After researching a little mor on the subject, it seems that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol alongside therapeutic doses of Gabapentin is well tolerated. More importantly, talk to a doctor and be completely honest about your habit, they will set you on the right track to stop. The anticonvulsant drug gabapentin is used off-label to treat alcohol-related withdrawal, cravings, anxiety, and insomnia. Although it is well tolerated and has demonstrated efficacy for mild alcohol withdrawal and early abstinence, there is concern about its potential for abuse. Eventually the gabapentin can’t shut up that internal voice well enough, and I go change the way I feel. Please do not mix gabapentin with alcohol it’ll just make your withdrawals worse as you’ll now be dependent on two different drugs. If you’re going to take it only take it for 10 days max. It will help with the withdrawal symptoms depending on how much you drink a day. If you’re not an extremely heavy drinker it will help. Does anyone else notice a substantial decrease in drunkenness when taking gabapentin? I tend to drink a lot, but when I'm on gabapentin I do not get as drunk. I probably drink less than I would, but I seem to be far more present in the moment. I also wake up without a hangover. I find it hard to believe it would be gabapentin after 5 days. But alcohol withdrawal definitely can last. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous and even deadly without the right treatment, especially if you’ve been drinking heavily over a long period of time. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include anxiety, tremors, sweating, and nausea. Mild to moderate withdrawals = sleep disturbances and shakes It’s weird because the original reason I was put on Gabapentin was to reduce my alcohol intake and help with any withdrawals. Dr prescribed 600mg 3x daily. At first, it immediately cut my drinking in half. I was still pouring drinks but it was taking me three times as long to finish them so it was a win! In these studies the combination of gabapentin and alcohol did not increase patients’ subjective degree of intoxication nor did it worsen related performance tests. If you are dramatically reducing your alcohol at once and ALSO starting gabapentin and ALSO naltrexone you may have sleep difficulties as some have commented. My advice is to start with 25mg of naltrexone and single 300mg pill of gabapentin at bed. My dose is two 600mg tablets a day for a total of 1200mg in a 24-hour period. I was prescribed Gabapentin for alcoholism first, anxiety second. This medication is a God send. After drinking 10-15 alcohol drinks a day for 40 years, within a week I quit and had no side effects from withdrawal - plus the anxiety went away. I do NOT crave alcohol I was prescribed Gabapentin after a spinal injury. I took it for several months before switching to different medication. No issues with addiction. I did however drink consistently throughout despite trying to quit. I truly hope it helps with your goals but for me as far as alcohol issues I can’t say it helped. Broken neck issues it was great. Gabapentin has a half-life of about six hours, so one dose is mostly gone by dinner time. That pattern reduces the interaction of gabapentin and alcohol. The six-hour half-life explains why you should take it three times a day - keeps a more level amount in your blood over time. I've heard it's dangerous mixing gabapentin with alcohol.
