Vets use gabapentin in dogs to treat a number of conditions, including situational anxiety, chronic pain, and (less commonly) seizures or muscle tremors. This medication is very affordable and low in side effects, making it a low-risk option for many dogs. We’re currently fostering a very reactive, 60lb dog, who also has separation anxiety. And unfortunately the rescue doesn’t really believe or want to put her on long term medication (the vet recommended fluoxetine). However, they are okay with gabapentin, as it’s not necessarily something that she needs to be on long term. I can tell you with 100% certainty that tremors are a possible side effect for dogs who are actively taking Gabapentin. I took my dog off of Gabapentin briefly. The tremors immediately stopped. When I resumed Gabapentin, the tremors resumed. I spoke with my vet and was directed to take my dog off of Gabapentin. The research that has been done and the literature on the Gabapentin for anxiety is actually a pretty high dose upwards of 2400-3600mg to actually be chronically effective from what I’ve read. I am wondering if it is worth attempting to ask out vet about using this gabapentin to help our dog manage his aggression/anxiety. Dogs with more frequent nervous episodes may need the maximum dosage of three times a day. My dog is 30lbs and receives 75mg of trazodone/400mg of gabapentin and his clomicalm. This is behaviorist protocol. She said since he was still a little iffy going in we can bump up to 600mg gabapentin next time and a little more trazodone. She even said we can top off at 1000mg of gaba and still be within his limits 😳. My sister's dog and my current foster are in the 30-40# range and have been told by different vets that 400 mg of gabapentin is fine every 8 hours for super high anxiety and reactive behavior. My 85# pittie takes 300 mg 2x per day, more for pain but it has helped with reactivity too.
