Well, turns out trying to come off of gabapentin after having been on it for 2 years feels like benzo withdrawal with some minor opiate withdrawal symptoms. the fucking first panic that happened was awful we were just watching the new top gun and suddenly I just kinda didn’t feel right walked outside or the room and was hit with a full on I used gabapentin to get off benzos. I was on them for maybe month and a half. I never really noticed them doing much and I was on a super high dose (2400mg I think). The combination of gabapentin and benzodiazepine can be safe in the treatment of benzodiazepine withdrawal, according to data presented at American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, which I can abuse it hard for two weeks straight and when I go back to a lower dose - it’s not that I have much mental withdrawal - it’s worse. NERVE DISCOMFORT has been the main symptom. I felt similar to a combination of an opiate withdrawal combined with a benzo withdrawal - just lessened, but since it felt like both - worse. It causes intense oxidation strain and can cause nephritis. People have even died from Neurontin. Also you can see from this FDA guide that tolerance tends to sky rocket pretty high fast too. Yes, Neurontin works wonders for withdrawal of all sorts- including opes, benzos, and alcohol withdrawal. Gabapentinoids are great for mitigating withdrawal symptoms. The issue regarding the potential seizures is such, although Gabapentinoids are well-known to be and are marketed as anti-convulsants, they are not typically viewed as medications effective as a seizure prophylactic. The way I do it to avoid withdrawal is to go down by 100mg each week. Gabapentin has a horrendously long half life, so it takes something like 36 hrs to 3 days to start feeling the withdrawal, so the 100mg step down over 7-10 days has been key for me. Sometimes I can go down faster if I’ve been at higher doses for only a day or two. Gabapentin will mask benzo withdrawal symptoms. That may seem like a good thing, but when you finally reduce/eliminate the gabapentin, the benzo withdrawal symptoms may still be there. And/or gabapentin withdrawal may occur. I had stopped taking clonazepam .5 2-3/x day prn and had no withdrawal after a few years. The doctor suggested gabapentin. I am having severe withdrawals after taking it for 8 weeks. It seems like that varies for everyone but I was on a low dose for a short time. So for those taking gabapentin or thinking about it for benzo withdrawal, remember to take the magnesium (and calcium) at least 2 hrs before any gabapentin. I'm taking gabapentin right now and it seems to help the taper, OP, but I also like magnesium before bed. Since the FDA data sheet is pulled up, this is what it says about withdrawal from gabapentin: "There are rare postmarketing reports of individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms shortly after discontinuing higher than recommended doses of gabapentin used to treat illnesses for which the drug is not approved" which furthers my point that, if a some people do find it helpful for withdrawal, but be careful using it longterm. Many people have found that gabapentin may reduce benzo withdrawal symptoms, but then when they try to get off the gabapentin, they get slammed with the benzo withdrawal symptoms that were being held back, and also get hit with gabapentin withdrawal. Gabapentin is de rigeur in benzo withdrawal and with brain injuries. For some there are side effects, for others it’s a good bridge into healing. Do your research and only you will know if it’s worth trying. If you start taking Gabapentin now, you might not be able to stop it for years. It can cause similar withdrawal symptoms as benzodiazepines and other psychiatric medications. So, you should be prepared for the possibility of staying on the drug long-term or having to taper off it slowly, which could take years. But, yes gabapentin works wonders for Xanax withdrawal. It’s extremely effective on opiate withdrawal as well. I’ve found large amounts are the best. 1800 mgs x3 and then be aware of how your feeling. Specifically, it is useful in treating withdrawal and maintaining abstinence in people struggling with alcohol, benzodiazepine, and opioid addiction. A research review from Pharmacology & Pharmacy indicates that multiple studies show gabapentin as a positive support to alcohol detox and withdrawal. I do think benzo withdrawal induced symptoms can go away as you taper -- some people do cut and hold and wait until the symptoms aren't bad. Others do daily microtaper to keep the symptoms from getting bad. I hate how much limitations benzo withdrawal has caused in my life. I also advice to be careful with loud noises (wear earplugs in loud environments because I believe we are more sensitive to get tinnitus because benzo withdrawal itself can cause tinnitus). I got tinnitus during benzo withdrawal after loud noise exposure that stayed. We have found that very gradual dosage reduction at an individualized pace minimizes the emergence of withdrawal symptoms. 56,73,93 Years ago, inundated by people with severe withdrawal symptoms from the “half, and half, and then off” reductions recommended by their prescribers, patient peer support groups propounded reductions of 10% per Its 100% gaba receptor damage. Im going through the exact same thing and have recent history of gaba drug withdrawal/long term symptoms of said withdrawal. Weirdly enough though this NEVER HAPPENED until after I got a higher quality powder in a stronger strain.
