If you read the information leaflet in the Gabapentin, on the side effects bit, many of them are neuropathy symptoms so I’m in two minds to continue with them. “I don’t believe in pain management anymore, I believe in trying to cure persistent pain.” Gabapentin has an average rating of 6.3 out of 10 from a total of 185 reviews for the off-label treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy. 48% of reviewers reported a positive experience, while 24% reported a negative experience. 6.3 average rating out of 10. 185 ratings from 197 user reviews. On the basic initial dose, gabapentin helped with my pain (I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, secondary fibromyalgia, and nerve damage in my lower back). Once winter came, however, the improvement was negated, so the GP doubled that dose, but that gave me the most horrendous spells of vertigo and dizziness - it wasn't too much later I I personally stay away from anti-psychotics. A dr 15 years ago prescribed this for insomnia. I slept 15 hrs straight. I realize your body gets used to it, but still. I could not work the next day taking that drug. I take gabapentin for nerve pain, and it helps me sleep well. I don't trust this drug, but for now I think it's necessary. My Doc just put me on Gabapentin for nerualgia, but only 100mg 3x a day. She didn't mention slowly upping the dosage. It seems like most people are taking a lot more than that. What is your dosage, and how long did it take to work? Is it effectively managing your pain? It depends on your pain level. I take 600mg x3 a day. Gabapentin slows down nerves so it helps with nerve pain, but your brain is also a big pile of nerves so it can slow that down too. Only way you can tell how it'll behave is to try it. It'd be great to hear people's individual experiences in terms of when they started to feel nerve pain relief, at what dosage, and how side effects changed as you titrated up. Was the nerve pain relief gradual or sudden once you reached a certain dose? Methadone is pretty much the only pain med that touches the same pain you have. I worked with palliative care and pain management, and they both agree that methadone is the only narcotic for nerve pain. Going to need to go to pain management, but asking for methadone for pain is totally reasonable, given your diagnosis. I dont remember the specifics. I was eating muscle relaxers like candy to no effect. The Dr explained that I had a pinched nerve that was causing the paint not a muscle strain so thats why the Gabapentin worked so well and the flexeril/soma did not. I felt like it just masked the pain while I healed and let me get back to normal faster. If you've been prescribed gabapentin for nerve pain, you may begin to feel pain relief within one to two weeks of starting it, depending on your dosage. However, for some people, it can take longer to see benefits. I love gabapentin, but if you have severe nerve pain or restless legs I would recommend Lyrica (pregabalin). Pregabalin is about 3x stronger than gabapentin. Contrary to most comments on this, I love it. It would relax my mind and ease my anxiety. It helped me sleep so much better. In all honesty, it’s all about the right dose. It's really only effective for nerve pain (burning, stinging, pins and needles, etc). It does absolutely nothing for any other kind of pain, though a lot of doctors are prescribing it for other pain now that opioids "are evil." Nerve pain after shingles, restless leg syndrome, and partial seizures are the on-label uses. It can help with other types of nerve pain and nerve issues as well, and is often prescribed that way. Edit: The documentation I'm reading says that the drug should be withdrawn gradually, and that the maximum time between doses should be 12 hours. I was prescribed Gabapentin after the surgery. It really has helped with nerve pain. Sometimes nothing hurts, but I would get something that I can only describe as a “zinger” or a mild electric shock. Prescribed 800mg x 3 daily for about two years after nearly severing my radial nerve and losing all functionality of my left hand. Most of the time, I’d take way way under that dose, but some weeks I’d have to take the full daily dose to get over whatever my nerve felt like doing to me that day. Usually without food first thing in am and then after dinner in the pm. I can't tell any difference between food/no food. I was having bad nerve pain in my foot after surgery so about a week after Dr started me on 100 MG 3x day, I decided to take 300 MG 2x day. I found that this dose/schedule worked better for me. Pregabalin starts at and is in lower doses bc it’s stronger. Gabapentin is a relative and starting doses are 300mg 3x a day. Gabapentin is also indicated for other uses such as seizures, anxiety and nerve pain where pregabalin (lyrica) is mostly indicated for nerve pain. I take it for nerve pain as well, and it will most likely be increased graduallyI started at 100mg 3x a day too, but within 4 weeks was up to 100mg 6x a day, then the following month it was increased to 300mg 3x a day, and eventually to what it is now, which is 600mg 4x a day, and it MAY go even higher still, to a max of 3600mg a day My Dr is prescribing Neurontin to help deaden the nerve pain, but reading the side effects and people's experience with it on drug forums, I am hesitant to start taking it. It sounds like it can really mess with your brain, perception of the world and cognitive ability. Gabapentin did not help me in regards to managing nerve pain. Pregabalin however, is another story.. Gabapentin’s bioavailability isn’t that great, and it actually lessens with higher doses (studies have shown it decreases from 60% to 33% as the dose increased from 900mg to 3600mg/day).
