I've been given almost all non-benzo sleep aids (trazadone, remeron, lunesta, hydroxyzine etc) and gabapentin is the only one that really helped. Admittedly I take 300mg like 5hrs before bed and top off with two more doses later just for a nice relaxing evening. I've been prescribed Gabapentin for sleep. I can only sleeping if I've had about 5 or 6 hours the night before but I'm tired through the day. If I sleep 8 hours I'm not tired enough to sleep that night. Doses go up to 2800mg (but that's because the effect as a function of dose is logarithmic, meaning the more you take, the less you get out of that increase of dose). It's shown to be an incredibly safe medication and has been used for a long time. My dose is 100-300 at night for RLS (but I also experience sciatica nerve problems) 7 weeks now I had some spaciness at first. Not now. Unwanted but mild other effects- Mild muscle twitch in chest, rare. Trouble focusing eyes later evening after the dose takes effect. So far it has greatly helped- I'm getting sleep now. By taking gabapentin at this higher dosage, I believe, I suppressed my ANS from overreacting to sleep apnea events allowing me more restorative sleep. It's only been 3 days but the improvement is drastic from being a zombie.
