I gave my cat the liquid form of gabapentin. I just grabbed her, tucked her in-between my legs facing forward, blocking her from backing up. Then I grabbed her head with one hand and used the other hand to shoot the meds in her mouth. I have to give my cat 100 mg of gabapentin tonight and 100 mg tomorrow 3 hours before the vet visit as she is getting her blood drawn. I’m nervous because she’s a 9.7 lb cat and I don’t know anything about how sedatives work on cats. My cats been on fluoxetine daily since then and gabapentin for situational things (vet visits, moving, etc). We definitely have seen symptom improvement but unfortunately not 100%, he still has a lot of anxiety and aggression with strangers but his day to day is completely improved. Gabapentin is supposed to wear off in 8 - 12 hours. The first time I gave our cat Gabapentin the vet told me to let them know if he's too groggy because the dosage may have to be adjusted. Obviously not all cats react the same way. Usually cats adore human baby food (all meat please) so this may be a way to get the medicine into her. I think I'll sprinkle 50mg Gabapentin on the food and if she only eats some of it, I can always resort to giving her a 50mg tablet. My vet says a cat Eloise's size can have 100mg Gagapentin safely. Never realized cats could take gabapentin. yes from what my vet told me it's a relatively new way to treat anxiety as well as aggression. In cats, gabapentin is most often used as a pain medication for chronic pain, such as from arthritis. Gabapentin is also recognized as beneficial in reducing the fear responses that a kitty may have to the stress of handling and being examined at the vet. My cat hates the vet. She hisses and scratches so they prescribed gabapentin to calm her down before visits. I can tell it’s working because she’s drowsy, calm and unsteady on her feet. But when she gets to the vet it almost immediately wears off. The last appointment they ended up having to sedate her just to examine. Increasing the dose slowly seems to really work well for him - cats can go way up to something like 150mg three times daily on Gabapentin (safely!), so his dose is still VERY low considering. I give my cat capsules ( not liquid) that I sprinkle and mix into her food. They are 100 mg capsules, I can use anywhere from 1/2 capsules ( 50 mg) to 1 1/2 capsules (150 mg). She usually gets 125 mg for I vet visit. Commenters recommended providing their cat Gabapentin on a previous Reddit post to help with anxiety, and I want to try every method possible before having to make the tough decision to rehome her. I would love to hear anyone’s experiences with giving Gabapentin to their cat, especially when it comes to introductions. Thanks friends! Thankfully the cat is still eating, drinking, and using the litter box. But for those whose cats are on gabapentin, how many days did it take for you to notice positive effects? I have no experience with it, so I don't know in my gut if it's actually helping.
