Gabapentin oral solution is supplied as an oral solution containing 250 mg/5 mL of gabapentin. The inactive ingredients for the oral solution are anise flavor, artificial strawberry flavor, glycerin, hydrochloric acid, purified water, sodium hydroxide and xylitol. Gabapentin is not appreciably metabolized in humans. Gabapentin elimination half-life is 5 to 7 hours and is unaltered by dose or following multiple dosing. Gabapentin elimination rate constant, plasma clearance, and renal clearance are directly proportional to creatinine clearance (see Special Populations: Patients With Renal Insufficiency Human liquid gabapentin frequently contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is completely safe for humans, but highly toxic and potentially fatal to dogs. Veterinary formulations, whether capsules or compounded liquids, avoid the use of xylitol. Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) is a medicine used to treat partial seizures, nerve pain from shingles and restless leg syndrome. It works on the chemical messengers in your brain and nerves. Gabapentin is from a group of medicines called anticonvulsants. The most common form of gabapentin is a capsule containing powder, with the prescribed amount mixed with canned or soft food. The 100mg capsule is the most common size prescribed for cats. Liquid Gabapentin: Importantly, while human liquid gabapentin might be a convenient option, it is NEVER safe to give liquid human gabapentin to pets, especially dogs, due to the toxic presence of xylitol. Gabapentin is FDA-approved as Neurontin to treat partial seizures in adults and children with epilepsy. Partial seizures are convulsions that originate from a single location in the brain. Gabapentin comes as a capsule, a tablet, an extended-release (long-acting) tablet, and an oral solution (liquid) to take by mouth. Gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are usually taken with a full glass of water (8 ounces [240 milliliters]), with or without food, three times a day. Use: Gabapentin oral suspension is used in the treatment of seizures, bipolar disorder, social phobia, and chronic pain. Packaging: Package in tight, light-resistant containers. Labeling: Shake well before taking. Gabapentin Oral Solution is a prescription medicine used to treat: z Pain from damaged nerves (postherpetic pain) that follows healing of shingles (a painful rash that comes after a herpes zoster infection) in adults. In adults with postherpetic neuralgia, gabapentin oral solution may be initiated on Day 1 as a single 300 mg dose, on Day 2 as 600 mg/day (300 mg two times a day), and on Day 3 as 900 mg/day (300 mg three times a day). The dose can subsequently be titrated up as needed for pain relief to a dose of 1800 mg/day (600 mg three times a day). Liquid Gabapentin: Importantly, while human liquid gabapentin might be a convenient option, it is NEVER safe to give liquid human gabapentin to pets, especially dogs, due to the toxic presence of xylitol. There are different brands and formulations of gabapentin that are not interchangeable, so use only the form of gabapentin prescribed by your veterinarian. This is particularly important for liquid versions of gabapentin manufactured for humans because these liquid versions typically contain xylitol, a sweetener, that is toxic to dogs and cats
