Edit: I know there's a lot of gabapentin related posts here already but I didn't see anyone really talking about long-term effects and odd behavioral changes. Hence another post about gabapentin. Share Add a Comment Gabapentin for anxiety - long term side effects? I just got prescribed 300mg of Gabapentin 3x a day, with the possibility to increase to 4x a day if needed. This is for long term management of anxiety but reading about everyone’s experience online is really stressing me out. If your cat is really struggling, talk to your vet about reducing the dose. My vet always counsels starting low and increasing if a low dose (like half a capsule) doesn't help. It's a billion dollar industry because of one reason. It works! Think about it. If PPI's worsen symptoms and causes an array of side effects, and kills patients left and right, it wouldn't be prescribed at all. The vast majority of patients on PPI therapy have minimal/negligible side effects and suffer zero long term nutritional deficiencies. She had the usual side effects and some of the rarer side effects. YMMV. Dog2 has a liver defect and some other health issues -- lots of things have side effects or weird interactions with her that are perfectly ok for other dogs. Early effects were balance and loss of short term memory, #1 effect is ongoing and #2 has largely dissipated. Long term use increases dementia risk 70%, but I need 1800 mg/day to not have horrid effects. Side Effects Common side effects of gabapentin. These side effects are usually mild and tend to improve over time as the body adjusts to the medication. Your nerve pain will come back because you are no longer treating it. Those could be side effects of Gabapentin (I don't experience any except some weight gain - I've been on it for around six years for migraine relief at 300mgs twice daily), but they could also be side effects of a TBI - my partner suffered a TBI in 2014, and has experienced those same side effects, despite not taking Gabapentin. In a seminal trial on pain following shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia), the target dose of gabapentin was 900 mg four times daily. It often takes weeks or months to build up to this dose so that Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking gabapentin: More common in children. People stay on gabapentin for life, its not harsh on liver or kidneys etc but make an effort to keep your dose as low as you can because you can build a tolerance. How do you split your dose? Do you take on empty stomach or with food? Brain fog, morning drowsiness, some fatigue, possibly some weight gain but with PCOS it's hard to say. I noticed a significant decrease in anxiety with not really any side effects, over time this changed. I recommend taking it as needed for anxiety which I will continue to do but daily use hasn’t been great for me. Gabapentin was prescribed to my cat for pain, and the amazing side effect is that she is now so much more relaxed and cuddly. Seems like a great medication with low risk and low undesirable side effects. If an everyday dose gives you and your cat a high quality of life, that's all that matters. The most common gabapentin (Neurontin) side effects are dizziness and drowsiness. This may affect your ability to drive or perform other activities. Other gabapentin side effects include edema (fluid buildup), weight gain, and eye problems, but these aren’t as common. My reason for the gabapentin is nerve damage from a fall. I got up to quickly from laying down and fell on my left side. I cracked 2 ribs. About a week later the whole side of my leg went numb from hip to foot. There is still some numbness there. I tried to cut back on gabapentin.
