Gabapentin, along with pain management, acts as a mild sedative to cats. For my kitty, who takes the oral liquid (which is 50mg/mL) became "zombified" at 0.6mL and lost control of her bladder at 0.8mL. However, my vet worked with me and we've found that 0.3mL helps my kitty out, and she still has most of her mental and physical facilities. Even if your cat has responded well to gabapentin before, still do a test run to make sure the gabapentin that you have is working and has not gone bad - For oral solution gabapentin, refrigerate as instructed, in a dark bag. If you are transporting the gabapentin, it helps to have a cold bag, or just a bag of ice to keep the vial cool. Commenters recommended providing their cat Gabapentin on a previous Reddit post to help with anxiety, and I want to try every method possible before having to make the tough decision to rehome her. I would love to hear anyone’s experiences with giving Gabapentin to their cat, especially when it comes to introductions. Thanks friends! I have a 1.5 yr old, 9 lb cat that has been diagnosed with stomatitis. To help make daily teeth cleaning more tolerable for him, he was prescribed 100mg gabapentin capsule, 2 hours prior to brushing his teeth. I'm convinced these are placebo pills. It does not help him relax, and it is nearly impossible to hold him still without being too My cat hates the vet. She hisses and scratches so they prescribed gabapentin to calm her down before visits. I can tell it’s working because she’s drowsy, calm and unsteady on her feet. But when she gets to the vet it almost immediately wears off. The last appointment they ended up having to sedate her just to examine. Increasing the dose slowly seems to really work well for him - cats can go way up to something like 150mg three times daily on Gabapentin (safely!), so his dose is still VERY low considering. Neither medication should have any negative side-effects. We often prescribe gabapentin or both for cats and dogs with anxiety and it tends to work well. Keep in mind that, while you'll see the sedation effects of gabapentin rather quickly (within hours), the fluoxetine can take weeks to take effect. Be patient. I have to give my cat 100 mg of gabapentin tonight and 100 mg tomorrow 3 hours before the vet visit as she is getting her blood drawn. I’m nervous because she’s a 9.7 lb cat and I don’t know anything about how sedatives work on cats. Thankfully the cat is still eating, drinking, and using the litter box. But for those whose cats are on gabapentin, how many days did it take for you to notice positive effects? I have no experience with it, so I don't know in my gut if it's actually helping. Gabapentin is supposed to wear off in 8 - 12 hours. The first time I gave our cat Gabapentin the vet told me to let them know if he's too groggy because the dosage may have to be adjusted. Obviously not all cats react the same way. So my cat has had gabapentin before and it didn’t exactly work and they had to sedate him with a syringe at the vet but now he has an upcoming appointment and they gave him an increased dose of gabapentin. However, now they gave him liquid gabapentin at 100mg/ml. I have a 18-year-old male cat who has CKD and arthritis. He was prescribed metacam for the pain but I have read not-so-great things about it. I was chatting with someone and they mentioned Solensia as being a great option as it is a once-monthly shot and doesn't harm the body the way metacam can. Why isn’t the gabapentin working anymore. Thank you for posting to CATHELP! While you wait for a response please keep the following things in mind, When in doubt, ask your vet . Advice here is not coming from medical or industry professionals. My cat takes 100 mg gabapentin 2x a day for pain and has since around July 2021. At first he was super loopy, now he's normal on it. Unfortunately I think that only speaks to how well it can be tolerated in cats, since my cat is not aggressive, I don't know if it would help your cat's aggression or not. Then I feed the other cat first and because he gobbles everything our second cat who has the meds eats quicker to catch up. The vet for say if we couldn't get her to have them there were other options, one was a gel that could be applied to her fur. This was for regular anti anxiety meds, but there may be other options if it's not working. I have a cat who absolutely refuses all oral meds, so we’ve now switched to getting his gabapentin compounded into a transdermal gel that goes onto the ear pinna instead - he’s still dramatic about it but it’s way easier so that may be an option for you if the capsules don’t work - my cat wouldn’t eat the food with the granules mixed My 8yr old male Siamese cat has been recovering from a urinary block. After the catheter procedure, they recommended 100mg of gabapentin every 8-12 hrs. It’s been 3 weeks and we’re trying to ween him off of it, but if he only gets 1 pill a day- by day two he has difficulty urinating. You can also try wet food. The only thing is, if you don't have any other doses you risk your cat not eating it. It shouldn't have a flavor, my cat had no problem eating it but you never know. I also found that the med itself was really strong. I have a 17 pound cat and I gave him half of the dose and even then he was a bit wobbly.
