Gabapentin and pregabalin are similar drugs but differ in several distinct ways. The main differences are their indications—specific uses that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved them to treat—and their dosages. Gabapentin (often sold under the brand name Neurontin) and pregabalin (brand name Lyrica) are two commonly prescribed medications that work in similar ways. While both belong to a class of drugs called gabapentinoids and are used to treat nerve-related conditions, they have distinct differences that can affect which one might be right for you. What are gabapentin and pregabalin used for? Gabapentin and pregabalin are used to treat neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and other conditions such as fibromyalgia and generalized anxiety disorder. Which medication works faster, gabapentin or pregabalin? Pregabalin generally works faster, with patients often experiencing relief within a few days. Whether Lyrica or gabapentin works better for treating your condition or is “stronger” depends on a few factors. And keep in mind that your body may respond differently to one or both drugs, Lyrica and gabapentin are two prescription drugs that treat some seizures and nerve pain. Here's a comparison of how the drugs are similar and different. Everything considered, standard Lyrica capsules are cheaper than standard Neurontin capsules/tablets at moderate-to-high doses (e.g. 300 mg/day of Lyrica vs. 1800 mg/day Neurontin) – whereas standard Neurontin capsules/tablets are cheaper than standard Lyrica capsules at low doses (100 mg/day of When you're comparing gabapentin versus Lyrica, you should consider the benefits and risks. Gabapentin is used to treat partial seizures that occur with epilepsy and nerve pain resulting from Pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin (Neurontin and others) are drugs used to prevent seizures and to treat nerve pain associated with various conditions (shingles, diabetic neuropathy). Lyrica and gabapentin both cause similar side effects, including tremors, blurred or double vision, memory or concentration problems, dizziness, and drowsiness. Both Lyrica and gabapentin are used as anti-epileptic medications and to treat nerve pain. But there are several differences between them. The main differences between Lyrica and gabapentin are: Lyrica is a brand name for pregabalin. Gabapentin is a generic name - brands of gabapentin include Neurontin, Gralise, and Horizant. Researchers publishing in JAMA Neurology describe the results of a unique trial in which 402 people with idiopathic sensory polyneuropathy were randomly assigned to one of four medications: duloxetine, mexiletine, nortriptyline, or pregabalin. After 12 weeks, each person rated their neuropathy symptoms on a scale from 1 to 10, noted any side These include diclofenac (Cataflam), gabapentin (Neurontin), and pregabalin (Lyrica). Some sciatica medications might be more helpful than others. Gabapentin is commonly prescribed for sciatica. But the evidence supporting its use for sciatic nerve pain is weak. Sciatica is a very common condition that’s also known as lumbosacral radiculopathy. Gabapentin and Lyrica are similar in their chemical composition and in the conditions they are approved to treat. However, some research studies suggest that Lyrica has some advantages, particularly with the control of certain types of pain. In this context, the objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate and compare pregabalin vs. gabapentin in terms of efficacy and safety in the treatment of neuropathic pain, aiming to provide a solid foundation for clinical decision-making and improve the management of this condition in medical practice. 2. Methods 2.1. Eligibility criteria Lyrica (pregabalin) is both chemically and structurally similar to gabapentin. It does however, have a unique way of being absorbed and has much better bioavailability than gabapentin does. Lyrica is almost totally absorbed (~90%) very quickly after taking by mouth. It's maximum absorption rate is nearly three times gabapentin. This is not the case however. Gabapentin is the generic of a different medication, Neurontin. Nevertheless, the chemical structures of Lyrica and gabapentin are nearly identical to one another. The main difference between the two medications is that Lyrica is more potent, and lasts longer per dose than gabapentin. Pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin (Neurontin) are both approved to treat nerve pain. How are they different, and which one is preferred? Compare both meds here. Which is better Lyrica or Gabapentin? Overall, Lyrica is better than Gabapentin. Although both these drugs are approved and give similar output, Lyrica has an additional system of absorption. This system of absorption enables the drug to be better transported and supports complete absorption more so than Gabapentin. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant with pain-relieving effects that may be used to treat certain seizure disorders or relieve nerve pain. Common side effects include dizziness or drowsiness and it may more. Lyrica can help relieve nerve pain and control seizures but it is likely to cause drowsiness. Based on studies of gabapentin and pregabalin in epilepsy, the EC50 values of pregabalin and gabapentin were estimated to be about 9.77 mg/mL and 23.9 mg/mL, respectively. 9 From these data, pregabalin was estimated to be about 2.4 times more potent. For neuropathic pain, pregabalin’s potency ratio may be even greater. Gabapentin and pregabalin both work to increase the amount of GABA (a pain-fighting transmitter) in your central nervous system. These two medications are in the same drug class. They are gabapentinoids or more generally called anticonvulsants.
