First question: I have noticed in last couple of months RLS is breaking through occasionally at nighttime. I have been taking 2 * 300mg before bed. Is it normal through time that you need to increase the dose? I tried pregabalin but it did nothing for my RLS. Gabapentin helped but it kept having to be increased so I got off that. I don't know why anyone would be worried about taking Lyrica (pregabalin) it's simply a nerve med, usually used for diabetic nerve pain . The antihistamines I was taking to help sleep made my RLS many times worse. Gabapentin was the most helpful thing in every aspect for me. Only thing is how fast tolerance build up seemed to be w them. There’s RLS otc meds that some swear by I am 85 years old and have suffered from RLS and insomnia for 30 years without help and then I found Gabapentin when I was searching on line once again. Took the information I found to my doctor and now 7 months later both of my 30 year problems are under control. It’s superior to plain old gabapentin because it metabolizes more slowly, therefore you only have to take 1 dose at night, less side effects, etc. Gabapentin is a very old med that has been used to treat all manner of neurological conditions over the years. I think of it as aspirin for the neurologist. It's two drawbacks are that dosing can be inconsistent due to issues with adsorption into the bloodstream. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to be discouraging, just an FYI. :( My RLS is still 99% under control, though (the 1% being that I get faint twinges of a possible episode when my allergies are so bad that I have to break down and take benadryl just to not be miserable lol). Gabapentin - the front-line RLS treatment for intermittent and mild-moderate RLS. The RLS specific formula is called Horizant. Dopamine Agonist - the gold standard for RLS treatment for daily and moderate RLS. Dermal patch (Neupro) is showing fewer problems with augmentation. Your oral choices are Pramipexole or Ropinerole. Neither works for my RLS but the gabapentin controls my bladder pain and FM. Would go crazy if I didn’t have it. As others have said, gabapentin does not cause augmentation (one of the great benefits of its use). RLS affects several biochemical pathways in the brain and gabapentin works though a different pathway than the dopamine agonists. I can also personally attest that gabapentin helps with my RLS. More than that, gabapentin is the only reason I haven’t completely lost my sanity due to RLS. In my experience it works when your RLS is moderate/mild, and doesn’t work when your RLS is bad/severe. I used to be so mad at it not working but now that mine is more mild it now works (mostly). It’s also basically the only medication that makes you sleep better without making RLS worse. No. Went all the way up to 1200mg at bed time. No luck. Yeah, the paper insert is pages and pages of info about side effects, ingredients, interactions with other drugs, etc. But the dosage section is pretty vague and talks about using it to prevent seizures (not for RLS). According to the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS: "Most RLS patients require 1200 to 1800 mg of gabapentin (200 to 300 mg pregabalin)." Has anyone been prescribed gabapentin for restless leg syndrome? I’ve been on it for 2 years to help with RLS but had no clue it was an off label for anxiety. I only take 100mg at night so I didn’t notice any negative side effects (I thought gabapentin was only used as an anti-seizure med). Just curious to see if anyone is taking it for RLS!
