Gabapentin is not scheduled as a controlled substance, meaning that the medication has little potential for addiction and abuse. However, the drug does show characteristics of various medications associated with misuse and addiction such as benzodiazepines, producing similar withdrawal syndromes and psychoactive effects. • Schedule V drugs have an even lower potential for abuse, but may include a limited quantity of narcotics. Examples include some cough medicines (Robitussin AC) and Lyrica. WHAT DRUGS DO PDMPs MONITOR? PDMPs track Schedule II, III and IV drugs in every state, and Schedule V drugs in 33 states and D.C., including Pennsylvania. Schedule III in KY (902 KAR 55:015). Schedule IV federally. Gabapentin – or Neurontin – is a medication commonly used to treat nerve pain and seizures. However, the drug can have potentially harmful effects when combined with other opioids. Michigan joins a growing number of states that have scheduled Gabapentin as a controlled substance. Gabapentin capsules can cause serious side effects including: 1. Suicidal Thoughts. And 12 other states require stricter reporting on gabapentin prescriptions. If you have a prescription for gabapentin, it’s best to take the lowest dose possible. Following concerns about abuse, gabapentin has been reclassified as a Class C controlled substance and is now a Schedule 3 drug, but is exempt from safe custody requirements. Healthcare professionals should evaluate patients carefully for a history of drug abuse before prescribing gabapentin, and observe patients for signs of abuse and dependence. Gabapentin has been a federally noncontrolled substance since its FDA approval in 1993. The chemical structure of gabapentin is derived from the addition of a lipophilic cyclohexyl group to the backbone of GABA. Presently, seven states have classified gabapentin as a Schedule V controlled substance, and 12 others, New Jersey included, require that gabapentin prescriptions be reported in the PDMP system. Every time a prescription for gabapentin is filled out, it will automatically be added to the database. Gabapentin has been designated as a monitored prescription drug, not a controlled substance. A DEA registration number is not required for a practitioner to prescribe Gabapentin, nor is a DEA registration number required for a dispenser to fill a prescription for Gabapentin. Practical Impact for Many Prescribers and Dispensers of Gabapentin As a result, several states have rescheduled gabapentin to control its availability and limit its potential for harm. Healthcare providers must be vigilant when prescribing and dispensing the medication. This post aims to offer guidance to healthcare providers involved in prescribing and dispensing gabapentin.
