I have been living with sciatic nerve pain due to a L5-S1 disc herniation for almost 6 years. I've been through multiple rounds of PT with little luck. Surgery isn't an option because the bulge doesn't present during an MRI, and no surgeon will take the risk. The typical starting dose of gabapentin for sciatic nerve pain for most patients is 300mg once a day. Your physician may increase the dosage up to three times a day. I was on 1200 mg x 3 per day. It worked. It wiped out my sciatic nerve pain. It took 2 years to get to that dose, because my tolerance kept building over time. When I first started Gabapentin it would just make me sleep all the time. Eventually it had zero side effects at that high dose. Missing a dose did though. Hi I have been dealing with sciatica pain since November 2020. I take gabapentin 900mg twice a day and 1200mg at bedtime. It works well for me but it took almost 18 months to build it up to this level. Gabapentin takes time to build up.to an effective level. I haven't had any side effects either. I recommend trying it. Gabapentin did help with the burning, the tingling and the shooting pains in my leg and foot. It didn't help me with the achy and worn out pain or the knot of pain in my back. I also got really bad head tingles, like it felt like pins and needles in my brain. Those are possible side-effects, not guaranteed ones. I have quite severe sciatica from a damaged nerve and take 3 x 2 Zapain (30mg codeine phosphate + 500mg paracetamol) AND 3 x 3 300mg Gabapentin to counteract the pain. The muscle relaxer, pain med and the steroid all was making me sick and I felt like the muscle relaxer put me in more pain than anything so I did so research and find that. Gabapentin plus Ibuprofen work great to reducing almost all the pain. Also I was in so much pain I tried NAC and it’s a life saver for nerve pain! Hi TK, Gabapentin or Pregabalin is usually prescribed for nerve pain but your GP is starting you on a very high dose. I remember when I started taking them they made me quite dizzy to begin with. Also bc pain is a negative feedback loop and actually causes MORE pain the longer you deal with it - unless you are working with all the latest pain psychology techniques. But half the time you may need medication to begin to learn those techniques! For Pain "I have severe sciatica in my right leg and horrible back pain due to two herniated discs, and severe spinal stenosis from an injury. I've seen 3 doctors and have tried everything out there. Today my doctor prescribed 300mg of gabapentin 3 times a day. 5 hours ago, I took the first one and AMAZING! I can feel the pain going away!" For some people, combining amitriptyline and gabapentin (Neurontin) may help relieve sciatic nerve pain further. But side effects are more likely to happen. Various forms of exercise and manual therapy can be helpful. There is currently an absence of high-grade evidence regarding the treatment of chronic sciatica (CS). Whilst gabapentin (GBP) and pregabalin (PGB) are both currently used to treat CS, equipoise exists regarding their individual use. In particular, Gabapentin takes a month to take affect and that’s usually for nerve pain. I have two herniated disc and was given that for my nerve and muscle pain. Try asking for Tramadol for pain if they don’t want to give you a narcotic. That’s what helped me with pain especially on days that I could not walk and needed to work. 10 votes, 14 comments. All of 2020 I have had sciatic pain due to my herniated disc. At first they gave me high dosage of naproxen which only dulled Pain meds unfortunately aren't expected to take the pain away completely. I was told a decrease of 1-2 points in the pain scale was considered a success. Of course, if you're sitting at a 9/10 without drugs (like I sometimes was), a reduction to 8 helps but still doesn't make the pain tolerable or your life more liveable. Has anyone here tried Gabapentin for their sciatica and what where your results? I recently started Gabapentin (300mg, 3x daily) for sciatica in left leg due to pressure on nerve root from protrusion at L5-S1. My pain doc prescribed it as a stopgap until I get an epidural. My pain is so bad right now that I’m not sure if either Gabapentin or Lyrica are helping. I would suggest giving one a shot if you can. Hydrocodone in a higher dose helps with some of the pain, as does Oxy but if you have a family history of addiction, please be careful. Any time I've tried not taking either gabapentin or naproxen for a day (I've tried only taking just naproxen, just gabapentin, or neither), I'm in SO MUCH pain. I'm definitely on the up, and the pain even without meds is in a better place than it was a month ago.
