Gabapentin has an incredible margin of safety with relatively few side effects, so it’s a very good option for older animals without adding much risk if they can’t take NSAIDs. My 57lb GSD takes 800mg twice daily, with the option of up to 1200mg TID. One of the benefits of gabapentin is that many dogs experience no side effects or only mild transient side effects.
