Hi everyone, as I mentioned my almost 8 year old guinea Ginny was prescribed Gabapentin .05 and meloxicam for her atrophy and loss of movement in her back legs and hips, a little bit her front paws too. Since water is bothering him now too, and he has had problems with critical care as well, I wonder if it could be something in his throat. How exactly is a throat abscess found/diagnosed, and how is it treated? I'm just at a loss as to what could be bothering him so much. Gabapentin possesses some anticonvulsant properties against these seizures when administered as a pretreatment, but high dose requirements and potential side effects make this impractical. My pig was on both meloxicam and gabapentin for pain. He handled the gabapentin fine but would be too lethargic to eat for an entire day on butorphanal (I butchered that spelling). Guinea pigs may suffer from many conditions that can cause pain, being particularly likely to develop osteoarthritis with some breeds displaying symptoms from the age of 1 year . Some breeds of laboratory guinea pigs such as Dunkin Hartley can develop osteoarthritis from the age of 4 months (Musci et al. 2020). Arthritis is often seen in guinea pigs that are suffering from hypovitaminosis C (scurvy) as this results in intra-articular haemorrhage (Witkowska et al, 2017). It has also been noted in those infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae alongside scurvy (Witt, 1988). Spontaneous development of arthritis has been noted in laboratory guinea pigs (Wei et al, 1998).. There are several other pain relief medicines available to guinea pigs, including gabapentin, amantadine and tramadol. These can all be given in oral, liquid preparations. In addition, injectable opioids are effective and local nerve blocks can be used in some cases. Gabapentin 3–10 mg/kg PO q 24 hrs. The best effects are seen when used in combination with other analgesics such as NSAIDs or paracetamol (acetaminophen). CNS: Mild sedation (sleepiness), ataxia (poor coordination) The most common gabapentin (Neurontin) side effects are dizziness and drowsiness. This may affect your ability to drive or perform other activities. Other gabapentin side effects include edema (fluid buildup), weight gain, and eye problems, but these aren’t as common. Gabapentin (10 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours) is a calcium channel blocker used to inhibit neurons stimulated by pain; it is useful for treatment of animals with chronic or neuropathic pain. Dexmedetomidine and medetomidine are newer analgesic-sedative, alpha-2-receptor blocking agents useful to facilitate examinations or diagnostic evaluations. Like tramadol, it seems to be most effective when used in a multimodal approach (e.g. gabapentin+NSAID). Side effects reported in humans include sleepiness, fatigue, and weight gain after long periods of use (Gaynor and Muir, 2009). A study by Fox et al.
