Gabapentin is a go-to medication for several conditions in cats due to its effectiveness and relative safety when used appropriately. Gabapentin is usually used to manage chronic pain, especially nerve-related pain. It is also used (primarily in cats) to relieve anxiety associated with veterinary procedures, travel, and other fear-generating situations. Gabapentin can also be used as an additional medication in seizure management. Gabapentin is a medication commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat various conditions in cats. It is an anticonvulsant drug that was initially developed to control seizures in humans. However, its use in cats has expanded due to its effectiveness in managing pain, anxiety, and behavioral issues. Gabapentin (brand names: Aclonium, Equipax, Gantin, Gabarone, Gralise, Neurontin, Neurostil, Progresse) is a medicine used in dogs and cats. What Is Gabapentin Used for in Dogs? Gabapentin is a human medication, and its use in veterinary medicine is “off-label,” meaning it is not FDA-approved for pets. But gabapentin can be prescribed to help with pain, seizures, and anxiety in dogs. Preventing Seizures For cats, gabapentin is frequently used to alleviate chronic pain, such as that associated with arthritis, nerve pain, or post-surgical discomfort. Beyond pain relief, one of its notable uses is for managing anxiety in cats. Gabapentin is a versatile and very safe medication for cats, effective in managing pain, anxiety disorders, and behavioral issues. The most common side effect of gabapentin in cats is mild sedation, usually temporary and typically decreases with continued use. Gabapentin is a medication commonly used in cats for long-term pain relief. It is also used to manage your cat’s fear and anxiety during stressful events. Side effects are typically limited to temporary sedation and problems with balance. Since then, gabapentin has been used in dogs in combination with other treatments to control seizures when other drugs are no longer effective or become toxic It is also commonly used as an analgesic to help relieve chronic pain, such as that caused by arthritis. Recently, some veterinarians have begun to use gabapentin to provide mild sedation and anxiety-relief in cats prior to stressful events, such as veterinary visits and/or travel. Gabapentin is used in cats to treat chronic pain, especially of neuropathic origin and anxiety. For pain, this drug seems to be most effective when combined with other types of analgesics
