I have discontinued gabapentin twice took about a week each time. No emotional withdrawal symptoms but some pretty wild muscle stiffness and aches for a few days. Overall not hard to get off. My plan was to write about my extremely painful and unexpected withdrawal experience after I felt better, but it has been FIFTEEN months. I was on 1800-3600 mg /day for 20 years. My physician put me on a six day weaning schedule. Gabapentin‘s half life is only like seven hours so it’s mostly out of your system when you wake up causing withdrawal every morning no matter how much you’re taking. Also the pills are water soluble. Gabapentin withdrawals were much easier for me than venlafaxine withdrawals personally. Gabapentin side effects while I was on them was just as bad as the withdrawals for me anyway. I did not do well on it at all. Then ofc my mental health deteriorated to the point I took 60g in 30min to intentionally overdose (yes grams lol). The way I do it to avoid withdrawal is to go down by 100mg each week. Gabapentin has a horrendously long half life, so it takes something like 36 hrs to 3 days to start feeling the withdrawal, so the 100mg step down over 7-10 days has been key for me. Sometimes I can go down faster if I’ve been at higher doses for only a day or two. Welcome to /r/gabapentin, here we primarily discuss issues pertaining to the medical, prescribed use of Gabapentin, Lyrica and Phenibut, as well as other Gaba related drugs. This IS NOT the subreddit for discussion of how to get high or otherwise abuse GP. The withdrawal syndrome is heavily underreported in medical literature and because the average user will never experience it, many doctors believe that Gabapentin withdrawal simply doesn't exist. It does. Gabapentin, Kratom, and weed were the miracle mixture for me. Stagger the gabapentin by taking one, 300mg capsule every half hour to 45min. I’d say so that with ~900 to 1200mg to see where you need it for relief. The only downside is it’ll take around an hour plus to kick in because gabapentin is absorbed in the intestines. Edit to add: do not use it for a month, Gabapentin withdrawal blows, I was prescribed gabapentin for years bc of my chronic nerve pain and when the time came to come off it, even after weaning down to an almost microscopic dose, my withdrawals were worse than opioid withdrawals .. Just got back from the ER for what turned out to be Gabapentin withdrawal! I’m a recovering addict and was prescribed 300mg Gabapentin 4x a day. I would take a little bit more than needed on some days but mostly just followed doctor’s orders. yes people do. all because it makes you sleepy doesnt mean it doesnt do others like that. for some people its very euphoric. enhances emotions makes food taste better. makes doing things easier and more enjoyabe. also generally. and im saying this generally. it takes more than just 900mg to see these effects unless you have never taken it Just experienced 4 days of gabapentin withdrawal. It was hell. My doc was on holiday and I forgot to get my prescribtion, so I just taught why not, try to leave it for a few days. The only problem for me was increased pain in the last week, which I fully expected. I did not notice any withdrawal effects, so everyone's experience is different because for some, it's hard. First lets clarify there is indeed a withdrawal with gabapentin. The withdrawal will resemble a benzo / alcohol withdrawal in many ways. Its also NOT a gaba A or B agonist, so its unlikely benzos will help much. Gabapentin has a short half life and requires 3 or sometimes 4 daily doses. I get interdose withdrawals and even just missing a dose by an hour makes me feel like shit. My mood is up and down throughout the day which I also attribute to the gabapentin. Fortunately, I found all the posts on Reddit about gabapentin withdrawal and told my doctor there was no way I would take that unless I was desperate. Fast forward almost a year, and unfortunately, out of nowhere my pain just started going bonkers, and so I became desperate about 2 months ago and had to begin using gabapentin.
