Gabapentin (Neurontin) has been extensively studied and found to be at least moderately effective, with about 40 percent of people taking it saying the pain was “much improved” or “very much Hi hang in there. I had shingles in my left side with pain outbreaks since Oct 2016. I have been on gabapentin since Jan 2016. The pain really does get better with time and gabapentin and shingles pain gets better a six months mark . I try to reduce stress and take a walk outside a few times a week. Gabapentin is used to control seizures, to treat nerve pain that can happen after having had shingles, and to treat a condition called restless legs syndrome. In addition to these FDA-approved uses, doctors sometimes prescribe gabapentin off-label. Gabapentin is approved to treat: Nerve pain; Some types of seizures; Restless legs syndrome (RLS) It also depends on your individual response to the drug. The time gabapentin takes to work is not the same for everyone. The effective dose of gabapentin is also very different for each person, and the condition they are treating. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug that is used to treat seizures caused by epilepsy and restless leg syndrome (RLS). In addition to partial seizures, it is also used to treat postherpetic neuralgia or pain that persists after an attack of shingles. Gabapentin is classified as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogue. Both gabapentin and pregabalin work slightly differently in how they help block calcium channels, which can lead to a reduction in nerve transmissions to the brain. Gabapentin is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that occurs after shingles. Gabapentin works in the brain to prevent seizures and relieve pain for certain conditions in the nervous system. It is not used for routine pain caused by minor injuries or arthritis. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant. Tricyclic antidepressants: Medications such as amitriptyline may be used to relieve pain. Membrane stabilizers: Medications such as gabapentin can be used to reduce the pain associated with PHN. Capsaicin cream: This topical cream can be applied to the affected area to relieve pain temporarily. Gabapentin does not work to treat the virus-causing shingles, but rather it is used to address the pain from nerve damage that can occur in certain individuals at higher risk of developing complications from shingles, termed postherpetic neuralgia. Some medicines for seizures also can ease the pain of postherpetic neuralgia. They include gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, others) and pregabalin (Lyrica). These medicines calm injured nerves. Side effects include: Feeling sleepy. Trouble thinking clearly. Not feeling steady. Swelling in the feet. Antidepressants How Long Does Gabapentin Take to Work for Nerve Pain? After taking a dose, IR gabapentin starts to work in the body within two to three hours. However, the full effects of gabapentin can take one to two weeks to become noticeable, and some people may need to wait longer to experience significant pain reduction. Some providers may also prescribe lidocaine in a gel, cream, or spray formulation to help numb pain at the location of the rash. Gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregalbin (Lyrica) work directly through the nerves to decrease pain. Gabapentin causes much more drowsiness compared to pregalbin. Many of my patients who have difficulty with sleep at night due to the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia do well with Gabapentin.
