Years ago I had tried a much higher amount, but it did not work. This small amount with the Gabapentin has worked for many years until about 3 months ago. I think I mentioned I had experimented with ALL of the anti seisure drugs at one time or another and Gabapentin (neurontin) was the one that worked best for me for nearly 10 years. Mike H: I had neuropathy so horribly by the time I went home after ASCT I couldn't return to work. Tried gabapentin, lyrica & cymbalta. I finally went to a higher dose of cymbalta to keep it reigned in, but still need oxycodone to be able to have a sort of normalcy. Angela W: I take metanx or L-methyl B6-B12. It seems to help some. The four medications compared in this trial were chosen because they work in different ways. But other commonly prescribed drugs were not included. For example, this trial tells us nothing about how well gabapentin, amitriptyline, or carbamazepine would have performed. I have peripheral neuropathy as well. Try CET, EBN5 or Metanix, mesenchymal stem cells , and spinal cord stimulator. I did the first 3 and am going to do the SCS. Many times we have patients that have tried neurontin and reported it does not work. However, they dont realize the normal minimal dose needed to get a benefit is 1200 mg/day. On occasion patients try it and only go to 300 or 600 mg /day and then think it doesn’t work. Why Gabapentin doesn’t work. It’s the mainline treatment solution for diabetic neuropathy. And Gabapentin doesn’t work very well on several fronts. It’s partly because it’s an anticonvulsant drug that wasn’t originally designed to treat numbness, tingling, and burning. But that’s not unusual. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. My EMG and biopsy results are negative for short fiber neuropathy so far. Depending on the type and cause (and response to treatments/supplements) it may or may not eventually get better (Read the Sticky thread: Neuropathy does improve). I would try to halt it's progression first, and then try to get it to heal. If your peripheral neuropathy stems from a condition like diabetes or vitamin deficiencies, gabapentin alone won’t resolve the root issue, and your pain may continue—or worsen—without a comprehensive treatment plan. This report serves as an update to CADTH’s 2015 and 2016 Rapid Response reports. These previous reports reviewed studies relating to neuropathic pain (not specific to any conditions) and two studies relating to human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-associated neuropathic pain, respectively. In the HIV-associated neuropathic pain report, the review suggested that gabapentin may improve pain and How does gabapentin work in nerve pain? The exact way that gabapentin works to relieve pain is not known. It may change the way the body senses and reacts to pain. Gabapentin is used to manage long-term (chronic) pain, not to be taken for pain as needed. Chronic pain can interfere with sleep and work, and lead to depression. I was diagnosed with (idopathic) peripheral neuropathy 18 years ago. I would truly LOVE to give you a positive report with possible solutions, but I have not found any to date. I, initially was prescribed Gabapentin. It did NOT help, but I was urged to stick with it, because it might take time. After taking a dose, IR gabapentin starts to work in the body within two to three hours. However, the full effects of gabapentin can take one to two weeks to become noticeable, and some people may need to wait longer to experience significant pain reduction. Gabapentin at doses of 1800 mg to 3600 mg daily (1200 mg to 3600 mg gabapentin encarbil) can provide good levels of pain relief to some people with postherpetic neuralgia and peripheral diabetic neuropathy. My understanding is that apparently, Gabapentin doesn't relieve nerve pain in backs! What about asking if you should try higher dose for few months and work down like me? I'm happy now on my dose and very relieved not to have my leg pain which had become quite debilitating and depressing. Gabapentin can alleviate nerve pain within a few hours to a few days of starting treatment, depending on the severity of the pain and the individual's response to the medication. It is important to note that gabapentin does not work for everyone, and the effectiveness may vary from person to person. Efficacy and safety. The characteristics of included systematic reviews and RCTs are listed in Appendix 3, Table 3.1, and Appendix 4, respectively.. The three systematic reviews summarized in this report examined the efficacy and safety of treatments for patients with any type of neuropathic pain, 8 painful diabetic neuropathy, 9 or fibromyalgia. 10 All the reviews included gabapentin I have been taking Gabapentin for 8 years for a pinched nerve in my spine. Now I have Mono Neuritis Multiplex and i take 800mg four x a day. Gabapentin is the only thing that helps the pain but it will do nothing for the numbness. Even Lyrica can't do that. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug that has been used for a number of off-label indications, including neuropathic pain. It is thought to act by binding to calcium channels and modulating calcium influx, or by blocking new synapse formation. Neuropathic pain tends to be chronic, is complex, and can be difficult to treat effectively. Treatment often involves pharmacologic and physical
