Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) is a medicine used to treat partial seizures, nerve pain from shingles and restless leg syndrome. It works on the chemical messengers in your brain and nerves. Gabapentin is from a group of medicines called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin is used to treat some types of persistent pain. It is especially good for nerve pain, such as sharp, shooting, burning and stabbing types of pain. Gabapentin belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants which are also used to treat epilepsy. Patient Teaching Associated with Gabapentin. Advise the patient that gabapentin can be taken with or without food. Instruct to swallow extended-release tablets without breaking, crushing, dissolving, or chewing.
