In addition to being used for treating seizures, gabapentin and pregabalin are often prescribed for many off-label uses not officially endorsed by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), including back pain, muscle pain from fibromyalgia, anxiety, bipolar disorder, insomnia, migraines, and vertigo (4, 5, 38). The challenges of long-term low back pain cannot be overstated. Long-term low back pain costs are now estimated regarding a country’s GDP, so how much resource does it consume. As some back pain has neuropathic features, it makes sense to explore the gabapentinoid family of analgesics. Many times we have patients that have tried neurontin and reported it does not work.
