My parents cat had gabapentin when they moved house. And had a long drive. Turns out he travels really well. So doesn't need it when he comes to a cattery near me. My cat also had it for stress and it worked well. Humans can come off gabapentin without too much trouble if it’s only a month. It's definitely something to ask your vet or a vet sub. The only other advice I can think of is to double-check the dosage before giving it to your cat. My dog has been prescribed 30 mg of Xanax every month for the past three years. I have a friend proving great real life support (ex vet nurse), and I do feel awful for the stupid cat. But I just feel so low. I've had cats my whole life and this has totally thrown me. With hindsight I would not have got another cat. The stress of the situation is giving me headaches. I wish I could just fall asleep and wake up once its over. He won’t be happy about that, he’s a very nervous and anxious cat and gets very stressed at the vets (hence why they prescribe gabapentin for him) so another trip to the vet tomorrow will affect him 😔 but of course I will take him if needs be. I keep telling myself, it’s just a bit of vomit, cats vomit sometimes. Thankfully the cat is still eating, drinking, and using the litter box. But for those whose cats are on gabapentin, how many days did it take for you to notice positive effects? I have no experience with it, so I don't know in my gut if it's actually helping. 50mg seems a biggish dose for a 3kg cat, how many times a day does she have it? My elderly girl has 25mg gabapentin every day for arthritis. My cat was given gabapentin after an operation - and I don't think he tolerated it well at all, he was really increasingly spacey, floppy and wobbly. Not interested in food. He was on the correct dosage based on weight, but it was clearly too much for him. @biscuitsandbooks she has at least one lick-e-Lix a day, sometimes 2, this is the only way I can get the gabapentin in her! Never tried cat soup though @Timefordrama unfortunately it’s not just a playful thing, she is really distressed and it goes on for up to a couple of hours, blood spraying around when she’s bitten it. Gabapentin Dosage for Cats. The dosage for gabapentin may vary depending on a cat’s size, as well as whether it’s being used as a pain medication, as part of seizure management, or as a sedative before vet visits or travel. From a safety perspective, a gabapentin dosage for cats will typically not exceed 50-100mg per cat to address pain or So far she has gobbled the gabapentin up in a little piece of cheese but I so also have some lick-e-lix if she cottons on that there’s tablets in the cheese. im hoping that the metecam and gabapentin will be strong enough to just make her sleep most of the time until her specialist appointment. Im so glad that your cat is okay now! What to expect with Gabapentin used as cat relaxer In cats, gabapentin is most often used as a pain medication for chronic pain, such as from arthritis. Gabapentin is also recognized as beneficial in reducing the fear responses that a kitty may have to the stress of handling and being examined at the vet. Gabapentin is an extremely effective and powerful pain killer for cats, and a cat in pain will stop eating. That’s where you head into dangerous territory, cats cannot go for long without food. Ask your vet to prescribe it in the flavoured liquid form, that’ll be much easier to disguise in a lik-e-lix, especially the chicken flavoured one The vet suggested adding a regular dose of gabapentin - has anyone any experience with it? Pippin is 16 this spring, is slightly overweight (trying to manage that), and has arthritis in hips, shoulder, elbow and spine, but is otherwise healthy. Gabapentin works well in stressed out cats as a preventative. It won’t work once they are stressed. Usually it is given at night and then 2 to 3 hours before the vet visit. Vet said he's healing really well but still needs to be in. She said he isn't constipated so he'll go when he's ready. I asked for Gabapentin and I got some 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Moral of the story is don't rely on the receptionist to give correct advice. My cat, Sam, who is probably about 16 had his first injection 11 days ago. He is currently on Loxicom and Gabapentin for his arthritic hips, but can only tolerate a half dose of Loxicom a day as it tends to upset his tummy and cause diarrhoea. Gabapentin has proven anxiolytic/pain relief effects (it's not a sedative). I applaud your vet for thinking of it. It might be off-label but many medicines are which are used to great effect. My cat is currently on Gabapentin which is a painkiller for a separate issue, but it really calms her down too. The feliway type things (there are other brands too, I use one called, I think, pet remedy) can help as well, as you can also get calming treats. My cat is now on regular gabapentin to treat FHS. When he needed to have bloods taken the vet told me to give him the pills two hours before the appointment to calm him. The easiest way to get him to take the pills is to use pill putty/easy pill - a tiny bit no bigger than a pea- and wrap it around the pill.
