I talked to my vet again about gabapentin and she felt it is very safe to use. She said she has used it on rabbits, birds, and several guinea pigs without any adverse reactions. I can't speak from experience with it yet, because I am still using metacam at this point. Comparative activity of the anti-convulsants oxcarbazepine, carbamazepine, lamotrigine and gabapentin in a model of neuropathic pain in the rat and guinea-pig Pain. 2003; 105 :355-362 Full Text Gabapentin. 5–15 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h; dosage can be increased gradually if needed, to as high as 40 mg/kg, PO, q 8–12 h. Ibuprofen. 10 mg/kg, PO, q 6–8 h. Potential for GI upset; give with food. Prednisone. 0.5–1 mg/kg, PO, q 12–24 h initially, then taper to q 48 h. Anti-inflammatory for treating arthritis. Tramadol. 2–4 mg/kg, PO, q Arthritis will need stronger painkillers as it is a progressive illness. What kind of metacam is you piggy getting and what dosage. metacam comes in two strengths - cat metacam at 0.5 mg/ml and dog metacam at 1.5 mg/ml. Cat metacam is unfortunately licensed for guinea pigs but they need such amounts of it that it is often not viable. It's been suggested for Beano who has persistent bladder/kidney problems. Is it safe to use long term, maybe even for life? Anyone had problems with it? I have heard of it but not used it. I can check my formulary later when home if needed though. I've only heard of Gabapentin for humans as my doctor keeps recommending it for me. Gabapentin can desensitize the cough sensitivity in the GERC model of guinea pig. The anti-tussive effect is associated with the alleviated peripheral neurogenic inflammation as reflected in the decreased level of SP. This study evaluated whether gabapentin could terminate or moderate nerve agent-induced seizures using a validated guinea pig model. Male Hartley guinea pigs were surgically prepared to record Guinea pigs/maintenance : 20-200 mg/kg SC, IM 2: Guinea pigs/treatment of deficiency : 50-100 mg/animal PO, SC daily 72: Guinea pigs/treatment of deficiency; start parenteral, then PO until resolution of clinical signs : 0.2-0.4 mg/mL drinking water 72: Guinea pigs/prevents deficiency; change daily: Vitamin D: 200-400 U/kg SC, IM 3: All species Guinea pigs are notorious for disguising sickness and pain indications from humans and other animals. However, the common signs that a guinea pig shows in pain are drooling, shivering, loss of appetite, inability to move, rapid breathing, grinding teeth, lowered eyes, and lethargy. Fox et al. (2003) showed that repeated doses of gabapentin (100 mg kg –1 orally) reduced mechanical hyperalgesia by 90% in guinea pigs, but a single dose had little effect. Moreover, they reported that 10 mg kg –1 administered orally for 6 days had minimal effect on neuropathic pain. This study explored the anti-tussive mechanism of gabapentin in the GERC model of guinea pigs. Repeated acid perfusion induced apparent neurogenic inflammation in the respiratory tract, distal esophagus, and vagal ganglia. The intensity of cough hypersensitivity significantly correlated with increased SP expression in the airways. Rabbits and guinea pigs are especially sensitive to caecal dysbiosis and possible death with inappropriate antibiotic use. Antibiotics to avoid in these species include the lincosamides, beta-lactams, and the majority of the macrolides. My vet has considered Gabapentin but hasn’t been unable to find enough information on its use in guinea pigs, or the correct dosage. The other concern is the effect in use, does it cause lethargy/confusion, as it can in humans. Gabapentin (10 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours) is a calcium channel blocker used to inhibit neurons stimulated by pain; it is useful for treatment of animals with chronic or neuropathic pain. Dexmedetomidine and medetomidine are newer analgesic-sedative, alpha-2-receptor blocking agents useful to facilitate examinations or diagnostic evaluations. Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) are medium-sized South American hystricomorphic rodent species that are commonly kept as companion mammals and are used in biomedical research. 1 Surgical procedures, some diagnostic tests, and a variety of disease processes cause pain and inflammation, and analgesics should be administered to alleviate them. 1 Pain and There are several other pain relief medicines available to guinea pigs, including gabapentin, amantadine and tramadol. These can all be given in oral, liquid preparations. In addition, injectable opioids are effective and local nerve blocks can be used in some cases. My vet has prescribed Gabapentin for Peggy as her arthritis is getting worse. I have two questions, how on earth do I cut these tiny tablets in half and how do I administer them. I have only ever given my piggies liquid meds by syringe. A conversation between The Guinea Pig Vet, Ellie Whitehead and guest blogger Sue Tate, Founder of Cavy Corner - Guinea Pig SanctuaryIt has long been my feeling that the provision of pain relief for guinea pigs is something we could do better. This is something that was recently compounded by a conversation I had with my friend, Sue, at Cavy Corner. In this blog I want to highlight the problems I’ve had a pig on gabapentin and it did initially make her a bit sleepy and subdued. She adjusted to it after a week or so I recall. I have another pig that has chronic digestive issues so we are always in between bouts of mild bloat and stasis.
