I started taking gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy almost a month ago. Over the last week my legs often go completely numb from the knee down. I can only assume it is the gabapentin. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal? Gabapentin is taken orally as tablets, capsules or a liquid that you drink. It's usually taken three times a day – morning, afternoon and evening. Gabapentin can be taken with or without food. Your doctor will usually start you on a low dose and build up gradually to find a level that's effective with little or no side effects. Gabapentin is effective in managing neuropathic pain and can alleviate symptoms of numbness, particularly when used in combination with other agents like taurine. You're right, there aren't any cures for the numbness, and gabapentin can only dull the pain, which is also not curable. I'm taking 3600 mg a day for the pain and numbness in my feet, and it's not working very well. If you have nerve pain, burning, pins and needles, etc., you can try alpha Lipoic acid, Acetyl l carnitine and magnesium supplements. Would gabapentin or neurontin help alleviate the numbness and tingling? Are there any good natural remedies in the meantime? Any info or advice will be most appreciated. Older adults who take gabapentin also are at higher risk of breathing problems. Because gabapentin can enhance the psychological effect of opioids, it has the potential to be abused and has contributed to drug overdose deaths. Drugs such as gabapentin have been linked in rare cases to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
