After a trip to the weekend emergency vet for a probable orthopedic problem (torn ACL) , my 19 pound shih tzu was prescribed Rimadyl and Gabapentin 100 mg every 12 hours. While my sweet boy is moving better he is now throwing up undigested food and has had diarrhea for 2 days. I don’t have any sided effects, I started 100 mg and worked up to the best therapeutic dose that helps my nerve pain. I have small fiber neuropathy, no side effects that I can feel. I get a little sleepy then it feels a little stimulating in a good way. Side Effects Common side effects of gabapentin. Gabapentin can cause several common side effects, including dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue. Other commonly reported side effects include headache, nausea, and blurred vision. These side effects are usually mild and tend to improve over time as the body adjusts to the medication. So I’m theory it’s should be offering your cat some pain relief. And also helps alleviating stress. However! It also is a minor sedative (hence why it works for stress) so maybe your cat is sleepy and potentially disorientated until they adjust. I would usually start at 100 mg qhs in people over the age of 60. Dog2 was on Gabapentin when she had pancreatitis. For her, it is definitely not the right drug. She had the usual side effects and some of the rarer side effects. YMMV. Dog2 has a liver defect and some other health issues -- lots of things have side effects or weird interactions with her that are perfectly ok for other dogs. It took almost 2 weeks after that before those mining explosions stopped. For me, I have to stay on gabapentin at this high dose and accept side effects. I can't speak to coping with the side effects of Gabapentin; however, neuropathic pain modulators are only a part of chronic pain management. Medications like Gabapentin are a temporary solution to reduce nerve type pains and are supposed to be combined with pain science education and patient discussion to assist in neuroplastic remodeling. For me it had more bad side effects than good. Severe fatigue, stomach problems, mental fogginess, and depression. Once I realized the side effects were from gaba (I thought I was just going crazy) I tried to get off it and had severe withdrawals for months even with a taper. Give Gabapentin a go, hopefully it helps. If you end up getting unwanted side effects then you can always try Pregabalin instead. It does the same job, see what works for you. Jokes aside; if you're experiencing side effects that you don't like then just ask your doctor for a change in medication. The dose of 100mg is really low, but some people are more sensitive to certain medications than others, this just might be the case for you. Gabapentin is fairly safe when you use it correctly. Ya, although gabapentin did help me for pain the eerie side effects of it I just couldn’t take. -It got worse the longer I took it & ended up being pretty scary towards the end & tapering off it. Pregabalin (brand name Lyrica) helped much more to relieve pain & does not have those icky side effects. Same class drug though (anticonvulsants). If you just down a bunch of pills, chances are you won't be feeling much of anything, besides a very subtle high. However, if you dose correctly, you'll be feeling fucking amazing for a long duration, and be 100% functional. It becomes a very nice opiate without the side effects and addiction. It’s usually decent for some patients with neuropathic pain, but I’ve found that it tends to cause side effects at effective doses in elderly patients or doesn’t work well enough in younger patients that respond better to amitriptyline.
