Gabapentin is used with other medications to prevent and control seizures. It is also used to relieve nerve pain following shingles (a painful rash due to herpes zoster infection) in adults. Gabapentin is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. What is gabapentin and what is it used for? Gabapentin is used to control seizures, to treat nerve pain that can happen after having had shingles , and to treat a condition called restless legs syndrome. Gabapentin is used to help control partial seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. Gabapentin is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that occurs after shingles. Each NEURONTIN capsule contains 100 mg, 300 mg, or 400 mg of gabapentin and the following inactive ingredients: cornstarch, FD&C Blue No. 2, gelatin, lactose, red iron oxide (400 mg only), talc, titanium dioxide, and yellow iron oxide (300 mg and 400 mg only). Each NEURONTIN tablet contains 600 mg or 800 mg of gabapentin and the following Dosages up to 2,400 mg/day have been administered in long-term clinical studies. Doses of 3,600 mg/day have also been administered to a small number of patients for a relatively short duration. Administer gabapentin three times a day using 300 mg or 400 mg capsules, or 600 mg or 800 mg tablets. Gabapentin oral capsule is commonly used to treat the following conditions: Seizures: Gabapentin is used to treat partial (focal) seizures. It’s taken together with other seizure medications Do not use this medication with other medications that contain gabapentin (including gabapentin enacarbil). This medication may interfere with certain lab tests (such as urine protein), possibly causing false test results. Make sure lab personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug. Carbamazepine Gabapentin is a medication that treats nerve pain by calming overactive nerves in your body. It may also prevent and control seizures in people with epilepsy. You can take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Each Neurontin capsule contains 100 mg, 300 mg, or 400 mg of gabapentin and the following inactive ingredients: lactose, cornstarch, talc, gelatin, titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue No. 2, yellow iron oxide (300 mg and 400 mg only), and red iron oxide (400 mg only). Each Neurontin tablet contains 600 mg or 800 mg of gabapentin and the following Recommended dose: 600 mg once daily, taken with food in the evening. Treatment is usually long-term. Initial dose: 300 mg once daily, with gradual increases as needed. Maintenance dose: 900-2400 mg per day, divided into three doses.
