Hi there! Look up something called redirected aggression. Something very similar to this happened to me. I worked with a cat behavioralist and she did have us dose our cat with small doses gabapentin every day, but we also had to make some behavioral changes (play with her more, try not to make sudden movements, try not to panic when she attacked) we’re all good now and no more gabapentin! My cat hates the vet. She hisses and scratches so they prescribed gabapentin to calm her down before visits. I can tell it’s working because she’s drowsy, calm and unsteady on her feet. But when she gets to the vet it almost immediately wears off. The last appointment they ended up having to sedate her just to examine. I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you could give me an update on your cat? We found a stray who was extremely underweight and needed to have her eye removed from an injury. She has terrible separation anxiety and my other 2 cats and her fight when we have tried introductions. I assume her eye injuries were from other cats. My cat is on gabapentin as needed for stress. He gets worked up at times when the opossums, raccoons, or stray cats come into the yard. He still sits by the window to watch these guys, but he doesn't overvocalize and hangs out on his cat tree, or by sitting on a little pad/mat I keep by the door so he can sit on something soft. The dosage for gabapentin may vary depending on a cat’s size, as well as whether it’s being used as a pain medication, as part of seizure management, or as a sedative before vet visits or travel. From a safety perspective, a gabapentin dosage for cats will typically not exceed 50-100mg per cat to address pain or Gabapentin should work within hours of taking it. And in the case of you not knowing yet what the issue is, gabapentin is also used to help relieve anxiety in animals. It is considered safe for long term use which is why it is one of the most common pain relievers prescribed (in humans, dogs, cats, etc) The vet said gabapentin is great for calming down anxious cats, but I’m worried my girl will fight the sedation. So I guess I’m asking for anecdotes — have you had experiences where gabapentin didn’t work for your cat and they still engaged in anxiety behaviors? Did it at least reduce them? Took me a few vets to find one that was willing to prescribe Gabapentin to help his anxiety and sedate him a bit before the visit. No one wants to sedate him without proper tests he’s healthy given his age. Hyperesthesia: Gabapentin or not? I have a very anxious kitty, Celeste, who has seemed to have developed feline hyperesthesia as of April 2021. While she is not to the point of severe self mutilation, she is running around the house away from herself for at least 40-50% of the day, tail going wild. I have to give my cat 100 mg of gabapentin tonight and 100 mg tomorrow 3 hours before the vet visit as she is getting her blood drawn. I’m nervous because she’s a 9.7 lb cat and I don’t know anything about how sedatives work on cats. I gave my cat gabapentin and calming drops together for shorter car rides. Their vet has allowed them to take a double dose of gabapentin. I keep my cat in a carrier that they like. When my cat gets scared in the car and isn't in a carrier, she goes under the driver's seat and it's hard to get her out while keeping all the car doors closed. My cat has been on Gabapentin since about April for over grooming and anxiety. It used to make him sleep a lot, but that doesn't seem to be an issue so much anymore. He still licks a bit more than he should I think, but his fur is growing back. My cat was on gabapentin short term for anxiety and it made her pretty sluggish and clingy. However, it affects every cat differently so I would definitely recommend a trial dose to see how it affects her. I also use feliway to ease her nerves long term and there is a room spray you may be able to use on the carrier to calm her. Wishing the best! My vet prescribed gabapentin for my cat before vet visits and for when boarding her. I trust him but just wondering- does it only make kitty sleepy- so she would be anxious still, but sedated? Or does it ease anxiety so that kitty is legitimately pretty happy? I’d like to have an idea about how she is feeling on the medication. The only change was an increase in gabapentin. The vet used the same amount of ketmine as his precious one as a general anesthesia. So we believe the gabapentin is the root cause, but we aren't sure. My husband and I have been heartbroken seeing our boy who is so, so active being unable to jump and run or climb his cat tree. I've only used Gabapentin to calm my cat for at-home grooming purposes and the dose for that is 100mg. She gets pretty knocked out on that does though. I don't know personally what a good does is for anxiety but from the people I know that use it, 4mg seems extremely low. The good news is that within 48hrs of stopping the gabapentin, both my cats are back to normal. There are various other painkillers available. Even cats with CKD can take NSAIDs such as loxicom. Otherwise, buprenorphine is really helpful. It can also make cats a bit zombie-ish, but in my experience less so than gabapentin. TL;DR: anyone here have experiences giving their cats Gabapentin for anxiety? More specifically, has anyone used Gabapentin for cat introductions? Is this a safe option? How did it go? The use of gabapentin was found to be a safe and effective treatment for cats for reducing stress and aggression in a 2017 study published in the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA).
