Dosage forms of gabapentin include capsules, tablets, and a solution. Neurontin is the immediate-release (IR) formulation of gabapentin that is indicated to treat seizures and postherpetic neuralgia. Gabapentin is also marketed under extended-release (ER) forms: Gabapentin capsules. It’s available as 100-, 300- or 400-milligram gelatin capsules (Neurontin or generic gabapentin). Gabapentin enacarbil, 300- and 600-milligram extended-release tablets (Horizant). The maximum dosage of gabapentin is 3,600 mg per day. However, doses greater than 1,800 mg per day haven’t been shown to be more effective than lower doses. The capsules, tablets, and solution can be taken with or without food. Gabapentin is available as Gralise, Neurontin, and generic gabapentin in the following dosage forms that are taken by mouth. How should I store gabapentin? Oral Tablet and Oral Capsule. Initial dose: 300 mg once daily, with gradual increases as needed. Maintenance dose: 900-3600 mg per day, divided into three doses. The duration of treatment depends on the patient’s response. Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant medication that inhibits the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, allowing for its use against pathologic neurotransmission such as that seen in neuropathic pain and seizure disorders. 16,19 It has a wide therapeutic index, with doses in excess of 8000 mg/kg failing to cause a fatal reaction in rats. 21 Gabapentin is available in 100 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg capsules, and in 600 mg and 800 mg tablets. The dose of gabapentin to treat epilepsy with partial onset seizures in patients 12 years of age and older is up to 600 mg three times daily. The dose of gabapentin may then be increased gradually if needed to a maximum of 3600 mg each day. Gabapentin is used to help control partial seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. Gabapentin is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that occurs after shingles. A third study compared gabapentin 900 mg/day, in three divided doses (N = 111) and placebo (N = 109). An additional gabapentin 1,200 mg/day dosage group (N = 52) provided dose-response data. A statistically significant difference in responder rate was seen in the gabapentin 900 mg/day group (22%) compared to that in the placebo group (10%). Capsules and tablets: Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Use scored 600 or 800 mg tablets that are broken in half within 28 days of breaking the tablet. The 300 mg capsule shell contains 2.1 Dosage for Postherpetic Neuralgia. In adults with postherpetic neuralgia, gabapentin capsules may be initiated on Day 1 as a single 300 mg dose, on Day 2 as 600 mg/day (300 mg two times a day), and on Day 3 as 900 mg/day (300 mg three times a day). Each tablet contains 600mg or 800mg of gabapentin. If you're taking gabapentin as a liquid, 2ml is usually the same as taking a 100mg tablet or capsule. Always check the label. The usual dose for: The usual dose to treat nerve pain in adults is 900mg to 3,600mg a day, split into 3 doses.
