That said if OP can do a test run with it, it'd be better. I used gabapentin when moving interstate with my cats, and one cat it made about 3/4 stoned and the other cat it did almost nothing to (and a vet administered the meds and I even waited an hour before getting on the road so it would take effect, so it was administered in the right dose). Yesterday my cat had a visit with the vet. The vet insisted that he take 200 mg of Gabapentin. Personally I didn't like that dose but, my cat is 17 to 18 Hey!! I traveled with my cat 18hrs with one stop. My cat didn’t eat or use the small litter box I prepared for her. Just don’t take your cat out if you don’t have a litter box next to you because my cat peed on me after we landed. Vet didn’t prescribe anything but she was mostly quiet the whole flight. Hi everyone, I'm traveling with two of my cats. We have a non-stop flight (IAH - LAX). My cats are rescues (well they rescued me), and they're Get the Reddit app Advice on my flight travel and administering Gabapentin to my cat. videos, questions, and articles featuring/about cats. Members Online. In cats, gabapentin is most often used as a pain medication for chronic pain, such as from arthritis. Gabapentin is also recognized as beneficial in reducing the fear responses that a kitty may have to the stress of handling and being examined at the vet. I completely understand, and just to ease your worries a bit, gabapentin is a very safe medication in terms of overdose, even in cats with kidney failure. Three pills at any dose is not expected to be lethal. Gabapentin may help to reduce aggression in cats during travel by calming their nerves and reducing anxiety. It's important to address the underlying causes of aggression as well to prevent future incidents. My cat’s (12y/o, male, 21lbs) vet prescribed him 100mg gabapentin for our upcoming 9hr move, which will be this Tuesday. They told me to do a trial run beforehand to see if the dose was appropriate, so I did that yesterday and the dose seemed correct, he slept most of the day (although he typically does anyway). Another tip, bring some churu snacks (liquid tube cat snack) to offer your cat during the flight. Also offer him water. It will help to keep him hydrated. My cat vigorously ate the treats when I offered so I suspect she was very thristy and hungry. I was going to give his gabapentin before flying but a friend of mine said “oh no don’t it can make their heart stop due to the altitude”. Is that a thing or is it safe to give when flying? My cat was on gabapentin short term for anxiety and it made her pretty sluggish and clingy. However, it affects every cat differently so I would definitely recommend a trial dose to see how it affects her. And in the case of you not knowing yet what the issue is, gabapentin is also used to help relieve anxiety in animals. It is considered safe for long term use which is why it is one of the most common pain relievers prescribed (in humans, dogs, cats, etc) So I’m theory it’s should be offering your cat some pain relief. A vet recommended gabapentin at a large dose, but I’m worried that could affect breathing on a plane and also it didn’t work for them in smaller doses for vet visits in the past. For anyone having to travel with your cats for 8+ hours, what advice do you have? Any do’s or donts? I’m a mess over this and really appreciate any advice. Thank you so much! That’s reassuring. My vet prescribed 50mg after I explained the situation of our first flight (had the exact thing happen with gabapentin). Flying tomorrow in the evening back home, tried the Trazodone early this morning with him and after 2 hours he was very sleepy. Don't worry, there's always people like this in animal threads. Every vet I've ever seen here in France has recommended gabapentin for travel - a couple of weeks ago the vet that currently takes care of my cat told me they regularly use 100mg - 300mg on cats that get anxious about going to the clinic and have never had any issues whatsoever. She prescribed gabapentin with the instructions to begin giving my cat small doses of it for the 10 days prior to the trip and then an additional dose before leaving for the airport. We have used gabapentin previously for vet visits, and we are planning on using it again tomorrow. Any advice on travel with cats and more specifically air travel and gabapentin? Thanks. Make sure your cat gets enough gabapentin in their system long enough before you start traveling. There is no reason to medicate for a 5hr flight and good reasons not to. I flew three cats back from Japan - two in cargo, one in the cabin. 12+ hour flight. They were fine. Meds can interfere with the cat’s ability to regulate their body temp. Just do without. It’s going to be around an 11-12hr day including the rest of our commute. Commenters recommended providing their cat Gabapentin on a previous Reddit post to help with anxiety, and I want to try every method possible before having to make the tough decision to rehome her. I would love to hear anyone’s experiences with giving Gabapentin to their cat, especially when it comes to introductions. Thanks friends!
