My dog was prescribed gabapentin for pain-relief. He has IVDD and kidney disease. My dog is 14lbs and was prescribed 100mg every 12hrs. Is this a reasonable dosage? After taking the medication, he does not seem to be able to move anymore. The vet never mentioned any side-effects related to the drug. Is this possible overdose? What Is Gabapentin for Dogs? I have found it to be very effective & she has shown no adverse side effects to the medication. The dose you have detailed for your dog is at the lower end of what can be prescribed. Gabapentin is a drug that needs slowly increasing to have the desired effect, and slowly decreasing if you want the dog to come off it. It should never be given straight in at the max dose, and should never be stopped straight away. It may be that your dog needs a lower dose to start them off, and slowly building up in the coming weeks. Gabapentin is a nerve blocker that was designed to help humans that suffered from seizures. It was found to help with pain as well. We have had dogs prescribed this, as much as 300 mg twice a day. Gabapentin has not only been one of the most effective led we’ve tried, but my dog seems to actually enjoy being on it (subjective, but call it an owners intuition).
