Gabapentin for dogs is an anticonvulsant drug that is believed to help reduce osteoarthritis pain by blocking neuropathic pain receptors. This medication should not be used as the sole pain-relieving agent for canine osteoarthritis. Chronic OA results in pain, lameness, decreased joint range of motion, muscle atrophy, and decreased function and activity. Dogs often become overweight or obese as a result of decreased activity. Identification of Osteoarthritis Underlying Causes. Canine OA most commonly affects the shoulder, tarsus, and hip. Gabapentin works by binding to calcium channels. This inhibits the release of certain molecules that are involved in transmitting pain signals to the brain. Thus, gabapentin should reduce a dog’s ability to perceive pain.
