my dog! he does not like being restrained at all and the vet dispensed 600mg gaba with 150mg trazodone before an appointment to do an ear culture. i knew that when those drugs are used together, it just makes them more potent. so i even had someone come over to help me get him in the car. gave it an hour and a half to kick in and still nothing. you could not even tell i gave him anything. but It looks like the dosage for your pet is at 15mg/kg based on the information provided; gabapentin dosing can go up to 40mg/kg depending on what it's being used for (higher dosages are typically used to relieve situational fear/anxiety/stress), so your vet has not overdosed your dog - pain management doses are typically in the lower therapeutic Gabapentin for Anxiety. Gabapentin does not have a direct anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect, limiting its usefulness for treating the chronically stressed, anxious dog as a stand-alone drug. Picking up my dogs "calming meds" aka gabapentin for him to have his predental check tomorrow. I'll report back on the dose because I can't remember off the top od my head. However, I wanted to add a recommendation for fireworks and thunder. My dog is scared of both, would pant and pace for hours after the noise stopped. My dog started on prozac about five weeks ago, and we are still in the initial loading period. To bridge the gap, my vet prescribed gabapentin. Gabapentin is an excellent option in managing anxiety when previous therapies alone have proven to be insufficient. It may be used situationally, prior to predictable stressful events, or administered daily in combination with an SSRI or TCA. I'm not specifically familiar with gabapentin for use with anxiety/reactivity (only for neurological pain management), but I can tell you that there is an adjustment period for many psychotropic medications while the body acclimates to it, and it is not unusual to see a sedating effect during that time. My dog has been on trazadone for several years for his anxiety and still had bad anxiety with storms/rain. We added gabapentin on those days with the trazadone and it makes such a difference. He is much happier and calmer those days. I know he feels better not being an anxious mess those days. We’re currently fostering a very reactive, 60lb dog, who also has separation anxiety. And unfortunately the rescue doesn’t really believe or want to put her on long term medication (the vet recommended fluoxetine). However, they are okay with gabapentin, as it’s not necessarily something that she needs to be on long term. Wooziness and drowsiness is a common side effect for dogs as well. It's used to treat seizures, but it can be prescribed in humans as a mild, off-label treatment for anxiety. I take gabapentin as needed as my anxiety medication and it works super well for me. Q: Can Gabapentin help with anxiety in dogs, and how should I use it? Yes, Gabapentin can be used to help manage anxiety in dogs, especially for situational stress like vet visits, car rides, or fireworks. My sister's dog and my current foster are in the 30-40# range and have been told by different vets that 400 mg of gabapentin is fine every 8 hours for super high anxiety and reactive behavior. My 85# pittie takes 300 mg 2x per day, more for pain but it has helped with reactivity too. For what it's worth, I give my 30 lb dog ~300mg of gabapentin for anxiety as needed (like around the 4th of July) as recommended by my vet. A short-term dose should not be an issue, but you should really call your vet. We currently have a large amount of 300mg caps of gabapentin from a failed treatment for a different dog (prescribed in Sep 2021). I am wondering if it is worth attempting to ask out vet about using this gabapentin to help our dog manage his aggression/anxiety. Gabapentin offers several benefits for dogs with anxiety, including: Reduced Neuronal Excitability: Helps calm the overactive brain responsible for anxiety. Pain Relief: It can simultaneously address pain, which is beneficial for dogs with co-existing pain and anxiety. So my dog does better with gabapentin that trazodone. Gabapentin mellows him out just slightly so that he can focus and calm down or come to me instead of getting stuck being scared. Trazodone, however, seems to make him confused and unable to focus, which can make him seem calmer but actually just makes him clumsy.
