I have small fiber neuropathy. I tried gabapentin and lyrica with no effect on my pain - gabapentin makes me incredibly sleepy and puts me in a bad mood. I'm having trouble remembering if lyrica was much different. My Dr is prescribing Neurontin to help deaden the nerve pain, but reading the side effects and people's experience with it on drug forums, I am hesitant to start taking it. It sounds like it can really mess with your brain, perception of the world and cognitive ability. I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. For what it's worth, Gabapentin didn't help me, so my doc switched me to lyrica and it works much better. Not perfect, but better. I also take alpha lipoic acid twice a day on my doc's advice. I have idiopathic small fibre neuropathy, so there aren't a lot of options out there besides treating the symptoms. Greetings - a peripheral neuropathy patient for over 10 years. Moved to Asia and a doctor here weaned me off of 1200 mg a day Gabapentin. He replaced it with Lamotrigine 50 mg twice a day. It might be an antidepressant but the box says Antiepileptic. This gets rid of 95% of the pain in my opinion. Coming off Gabapentin was tough, I was very angry. My TSH was 16.8 though (a friend with hypothyroidism said that was super high, but I don’t know anything about it). My doctor said my chronically untreated thyroid is likely the cause of the neuropathy. Has anyone else experienced this? Anyway, starting thyroid meds today, and taking Gabapentin for some relief from the jolts of pain and achy I have neuropathy and I manage just fine without taking anything. Intense sunlight is the only remedy for me. Some people can tolerate these medications but others can’t. I swear by Gabapentin, and have been on the maximum dose for years now. You'll probably feel a little high, maybe unpleasantly so, the first week, but it passed pretty quickly for me as my body acclimated. In general, it sounds like most people who try Gabapentin either see a lot of relief or not much at all. Gabapentin worked wonderful for nerve pain for me for about a year. It took me a few days to get used to it. At first it made me extremely drowsy and I could not take it 3 times a day or I would be useless at work. My doctor worked with me to find a way to slowly increase the dose to t Its worth noting that I have small fiber neuropathy that's idiopathic but likely autoimmune, gabapentinoids tend to not work great for my specific flavor of neuropathy - other kinds may fare better. I'm currently taking 1200mg of gabapentin a day and 60mg of cymbalta daily. Gabapentin completely eliminated the pain and numbess for a bit over a year. Eventually the pain and numbness came back even stronger and the doctor recommended cymbalta. Now with taking both medications im living much more comfortably. I have been taking Pregabalin for the past 8 weeks for neuropathy as my feet were driving me nuts. They would have a burning sensation at the same time as feeling cold (which I know does not make sense), if anything touched them it felt like sandpaper was being dragged over them. Gabapentin is helpful to some people with specific pain problems as many in the comments are suggesting. However if you are getting TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to treat depression and/or anxiety keep in mind gabapentin can actually reduce the efficacy of the treatment. Most of them use the synthetic form of Vitamin B6, pyridoxine hydrochloride, which can actually CAUSE neuropathy in many people: Peripheral neuropathy with supplementary vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) Look for supplements that use the “P-5-P” form of B6. I have found that P5P on it own actually makes my neuropathy better. Gabapentin has an average rating of 6.3 out of 10 from a total of 185 reviews for the off-label treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy. 48% of reviewers reported a positive experience, while 24% reported a negative experience. 6.3 average rating out of 10. 185 ratings from 197 user reviews. The 100mg dose currently is doing fuck all, which i'm not surprised about as i know a therapeutic dose of gabapentin for neuropathy is 300mg. Yesterday, the pain was really getting to me. I ended up having a lil bit of a freak out last night. I've been on Gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy for 6 years now. I have numbness in the soles of both feet, yet I describe my sensations without Gaba as random pain in spots of my feet as though I'm walking on rocks, and I would get electric jolts in my feet as I tried to sleep. Yeah, I've been on gabapentin for several months for neuropathy. Unfortunately my neuropathy just kept getting worse with time so my dosage is pretty high at this point. Side effects were drowsiness, some irritability, and feeling generally more emotional. Researchers compare four treatments for neuropathy. Researchers publishing in JAMA Neurology describe the results of a unique trial in which 402 people with idiopathic sensory polyneuropathy were randomly assigned to one of four medications: duloxetine, mexiletine, nortriptyline, or pregabalin. After 12 weeks, each person rated their neuropathy Gabapentin is approved to treat seizures and postherpetic neuralgia, a type of nerve pain from shingles. It is thought to work by changing how nerves send messages to your brain. It is also used off-label to treat other neuropathic pain conditions.
